Quote (Chris @ 05 2003 Nov.,20:16) | No, we have no problems posting links to the pictures, I did it for about a weeks worth of the Epic pics! | don't speak for us all
and certainly don't speak for Cyber whose site this is and may not be aware of what you are advocating!
I have problems with posting links to pictures.
Having said that it was me who told you how to get the links, but I didn't actually post the links, you needed to know a little about the way links to pictures work in order to "fiddle" the URL in order to see the unseen pictures. But you still had to either type in the URL (or paste from the GW site) in order to view the pictures.
There is also a more meaningful reason why you should not just link to the pictures from the GW site.
If you put a link to a picture on this suite, GW's server will record the referrer (this site) for every "hit" on their website and they may take particular grief at this forum/site listing URLs of unseen pictures...
they may ask the site to stop doing it, or take legal action to stop you from doing it - they did this recently with independent online web stores which deeplinked pictures from the GW online store
there have been a few legal cases on deep linking, usually URLs, but in some cases resources such as pictures or text.
Of course if you just type in the URL, then there is no referring site, it just counts as a hit without a referring site!
Remember a PM counts as this site as well.
In regards to my pictures on my website, I always prefer people to link to the page with the pictures on (and yes I know that I gave the link to one GW picture, sorry Cyber).

Quote (frater_sinister @ 05 2003 Nov.,21:31) | So where do we stand on this?? |
as this is Cyber's site and he is ultimately responsible for what is posted on it, I would leave it to him to decide
It might come in handy later to have some policy on what Jimbo mentions as that was the reason I didn't link to the pics (too lazy to write what Jimbo did | I think posting guidelines and an FAQ may be useful.
Anyway, I hope they will post more previews or anything else related to EpicA, and what do we do in the future, regarding pictures and the like? |
I hope they post more previews, though I wish I had never posted my post of forthcoming pictures as it started this all off...
I think most people know how to work out the pic URLs and if you don't try and work it out!

Well I am sorry if I have offended anyone with my statement, but in the past, we have had no problems, and no one has _ever_ had any objection to it, webmasters or moderators or otherwise. Due to the confusion this has caused, I believe that we need some set rules in place for this type of thing, so that we know where we stand on posting links to pictures, and thus eliminating any cause for complaint, or even legal action.
Cheers
Chris

Chris I don't think anyone is offended as such by your statement
there isn't really an issue with posting links to pages which have pictures on (which is what has happened in the past) very rarely does anyone post a direct link to a picture
I am an expert (but no lawyer) in relation to copyright and copyright infringement. Here is an article I wrote for work
http://www.westerncc.ac.uk/help117.html
on mp3 and linking.
I started the whole ball rolling by pretending to know which pictures were coming up on the GW site because I had worked out the URL of the picture of the day and then by guessing that 3 followed 2 and 4 followed 3 what the picture URLs would be. I then wrote a post in which I pretended to look into the future and tell people what was coming.
Somone else then worked how I had done it (Tom I think).
Legion couldn't work out how to do it on his webTV and then you posted all the URLs to help him out.
Then in another thread, Crimson posted a direct link to my picture of the Ork Landa, which I objected to. My reasons were explained there and by linking to the page another poster on the forum was then able to see my other pictures. However I do have other reasons why I object to deep-linking of pictures (not pages I think that's great).
1. Once someone lifted one of my pictures

and used it to sell the models of it they had and I never got any money for it!
2. Someone once linked (as I am doing above) my pictures to another forum (of which I was unaware) and did not credit or link back to my site. This meant that he was gaining the kudos for the pictures and I was paying for the bandwidth.
3. Webspace and bandwidth are not free, it costs me money, my webspace costs me approx ?100 per year. If people are not visiting my site (just seeing my pictures) then they won't see my Amazon adverts which bring in approx ?100 per year! Without that I wouldn't have a website and I would have no pictures on the web.
After you posted
No, we have no problems posting links to the pictures, I did it for about a weeks worth of the Epic pics!

it got me thinking that maybe this was not such a good idea to post GW URLs direct (as they are more than likely not to be happy) hence my post stating that this picture linking may not be a good idea. Though I think it was the "we" bit which got me on my high horse!

It is very very easy to infringe copyright (I know I have on my website) and is linking to a picture copyright infringement, probably not. However I do feel that GW would not be happy about it and would ask for it to be stopped.
I also realise that some people don't care if they infringe copyright and that it is okay to do! However this is not a "free" forum and I know that we would miss it if it disappeared!

Well, after posting the link to a picture on the Specialist site myself, I then read this thread! ?
Jimbo makes some excellent points, and we should have a policy. There is the makings of one in the rules and regulations (which everyone read when they joined... right?).
In general, I agree completely with Jimbos sentiments about posting the links to pictures only. This happens to me a lot, and irritates me no end. The last set of pictures that I put up from Salute had this problem, but I partially got around it by adding the site name to the actual picture itself, in a place that would be difficult to cut out!
I found that someone had linked to the pictures within 12 hours if them going up, and then posted them as an ad for their site! And all the time, I was paying every time someone viewed them.
In general, if you link to pictures, please link to the entire page that contains the picture. That way, it is advertising for a site. I have no problem with people saying 'look here, this site has new pictures and is great, check it out'.
The proble crops up when there is only a picture, and no page or link. This is a rare occurrence, and I can only think of instances like the 'future releases' of Fanatic. In general, I think that this should be discouraged. But, at the same time, I cant expect people to not talk about them.
So, the guidelines are:
If you are posting pictures, please post a link to the entire page containing the picture.
If you are posting about a picture which has no page, post a link to the page closest to the picture, with instructions of what to click to get there.
If you are posting about a picture which is inaccessible through clicks, please dont post the entire URL - although 'hints' are OK. (Also, even if you have the permission of the owner, please dont. These things are impossible to verify and it is best just avoided.)
If you want to advertise a site (within reason, there is a difference between advertising and spamming), go ahead.
How does this sound (in particular to Jimbo)? Thanks.
(I am now off to edit my last post to fit my own rules!)
[EDIT: I have added this to the Forum rules, although any feedback on this would be welcomed]
