Right, after a too long absence due to real life degree commitments and moving towns. I have returned to playing epic, and more importantly coverting all the 40k players in my area to the game  .

The problem is that my local store only has 4X4 gaming tables, this slightly unbalances the standard game. does this overly effect the game play from the books 6x4 setup? if so what armies suffer/benifet?

the armies i have availabe (thus im using to teach) are
Titan legions (3 of)
skitari/guard
marines (ultra marines and thousand sons)
eldar (ghost warrior list)
orks (standard book list)

which of those would be best suited to new players? iv had great intrest playing a 'stop the gargant' game using the forces from the old Epic 40k missions book, just not too sure where to take it next?

help/ ideas welcome..

NG

When my gaming group started playing Epic:A we only ever played on a 4x4 table... so we kept armies in the 2000-2500 point range and never had a problem... as well, it tends to play faster then and you can get more games in!  *laugh*

I'd start with non-war engine games of Marines vs Orks or Imperial Guard vs Orks...classic confrontations to get people to understand the game mechanic.

Running the "training missions" in the Epic rulebook are good too!  You really need to help the 40k players get their minds around "going for objectives" vs "kill everything!" as win conditions... that's what I found the toughest to impart at first... once they get it though... *laugh*

currently the max size has been 3000pts, slightl larger than what you have used but least it seems i wasnt going too overboard on the size of games.

luckily 5th ed 40K has driven the idea of objectives home so that has yet to be a problem so far. the main issue with the ojectives is the 'Triangle of doom' (trademark pending). where 3 objectives end up forming a triangle that is easily claimed by one unit with others acting as a wall on the outside... some thing that has made my marines very popular to use with thunder hawk assaults...

Well, realize that objectives can be placed right to the "side" edges of the board, the 30cm restriction zone is only measured from the *player's* edge, not any other edge... and don't forget to try the occasionaly corner deployment to mix things up!

If you can, I would push two 4'x4' tables together to give you a 6'x4' playing area. I like playing on tables slightly bigger than the playing area to allow extra room on the side for dice, blast markers, minis, etc.

Welcome back, I'd agree with others use standard orks & marines/IG. Keep the Titans back as an incentive to play more. Also cut back on the size of the games to max 2500 and make sure that you have a good amount of terraine.
