So... 5000 point game... no after game comments?  Not even about the flamer template concern in Turn 2?

Must be those damned Tau distracting eveyone!

That's one hell of a battle and one hell of a report, Chroma!  :D

About the flamer template, my first thought upon reading your comment was "it'd be a lot more simpler if we did away with the flamer template in favor of a simple BP weapon". I know this has come up before, but I can't see (and can't remember  :p ) why this idea has been implemented. It's a lot simpler and it would remove a special rule.

I have been thinking of using different table sheets for snow fields, desert or ash wastes and after seeing this I think that's what I'll be doing. Quite effective.

If you do go "cover sheets" for the base of your table like we do, you've really go to pay attention to the texture/weave of the cloth.  Before you buy it, check out how it crumples/wrinkles and if it lays flat nicely without "bunching"... I had no desire to *iron* my battlefield before playing!  *laugh*

Having the different coloured clothes can allow you to do some really cool things; did you see my report of IG vs Biel-Tan fighting over an archipeligo?

snow is bad...

I was helping my buddy with the property he has for landscaping so I was shoveling snow for a good 8 hours yesterday haha.

Needless to say I'm walking around like an old man.

Still good for tomorrow though...

wait a sec...isn't HK closed on mondays?

Great read as always

On the Flamer template, I'm with Hena. If you follow the barrage rules 1.9.8, you measure the range from "unit to unit", only firing the weapon(s) if there are enemy units in LoS and range. Here, the Warlock is out of range so the flamer is not fired. However if it were in range, then anything else under the template would also have been hit - so at that point would the Guardians would also have got incinerated.

On the "Leaderless" swarm, this is the precise situation we have been discussing and there are several positions.
  • RAW, the swarm makes a move and is then checked for control, being removed if out of control of any Synapse - so dies as you played it (a stricter ruling was that it needed to be under the control of its own synapse).
  • If checking is deferred to the end of the turn, then obviously the swarm is removed if it is still not under the control of a Synapse at that point - though this approach also allows some unintended quirks
  • The remnants of the swarm are removed if it is not under control after it completes all of its movement. This would normally be at the end of its activation, though here it would be after the broken swarm has completed it's withdrawal move.

HK is closed on Sundays... opens at 3:00 on Mondays... and, barring weather, I'm still good for Monday!

I'll probably even bring my battle report logs and record the game.

I am a little intruiged at the use of the Cobras. I would have thought with the TK weapons, these were the formation of choice to go after the Dominatrix, especially as centering one template on the big bug would also have placed a second on the swarm. With 4x shots and TKD3 +1 it is quite possible to squish the big ugly bug in one go (though it would need screening etc).

Final question - how did the spawning feel here? Were you able to hold some swarms back to feed bugs forward to the frontline??

My opponent couldn't get the Cobras in close enough to tag the Dominatrix, so it never came up; that 30cm range can be really crippling.

But, *I* was scared he'd just do a suicide run with the pair of them... but on a double, they'd still only be hitting on 6+, and even with 4 dice that's not the best odds for risking a 500 point formation.

Hence the note about screening. It is a viable tactic if you can put something else in the way - like some formations of jet-bikes. Then you move the Cobras up, intending to sustain in the next turn . . . (of course that sounds fine on paper etc  )

Other than the turn when I was able to spawn back four Dactylis, spawning was, essentially, a non-issue.  When the fighting is thick, it seems *very* light, 2 Termagants or a single Ravener returned doesn't make much difference to a swarm.

An opponent *quickly* learns to leave even broken formations within 30cm of at least one swarm unit to deny the full 2d3 and if your formation has withdrawn to be more than 30cm away, it usually means you're not going to be able to bring it fully to bear on the enemy next turn.

I *do* like the mechanic of it, losing/gaining d3s, but it just feels... light to me.

Now, what I *did* enjoy, was having a "good" swarm scoop up a broken swarm's Brood creatures after they failed to rally... had never thought of that before and it was fantastic for beefing up a swarm!

I'll most likely be in Burlington anyways, but weather permitting what time do you want to start floating in there at?

drop me an email here if things change.
