From a purely theortetical viewpoint, wouldn't it be better to have the stronger monolth formations up front supported by the weaker singletons to their rear? The theory being that the front formations need to survive the enemy fire / assault to bring the rear support into play.

Thanks Chroma I was trying to do a similar response and that saves me the trouble.

If the Eldar was brave enough he could target a central monolith and possibly get all the nearby monoliths in range for a BM

Thank goodness I'm bored on my lunch... *laugh*

With Moscovian's misunderstanding of the support BM rule, I can see how one would try this teleport deployment, but I don't think I'd cluster my Monoliths like that though... and, putting the "two-Monolith" formations in front, mean you're more likely to have an already Blast markered formation in front of the enemy...

I don't think Monolith deployment is an easy task... and it's not easy to be on the recieving end either!   :O

I am familiar with the bolded portion of the rules, but when the assault rules were modified they did away with the token assaults.  In that modification, I believe it broke out the assault phases in such a way that -if the target formation was killed outright- the assault simply ended.

If all of the units in the defending formation have been killed and at least one attacker survives, then the attacker wins and the assault is over (go straight to 1.12.8).

2008 errata

1.12.8 reads...
1.12.8 Loser Withdraws

That skips the supporting fire phase.

You've been adding extra BMs, KEVIN! 8v)

You've been depriving yourself of inflicted Blast markers, Bill!

Another situation of a battle report showing how some gamers are misinterpreting the rules slightly.

That can only be good for development, even if it only helps in getting everyone using the rules correctly.

Agreed, although you may want to look at the post above yours to figure out 'which' gamers are misinterpreting. ???

Sorry Charlie... I mean, Bill!

This is the totality of errataed 1.12.8:

1.12.8 Loser Withdraws

After the result of the combat has been worked out (either
because all defending units were destroyed, or the
attack stalled, or through a result roll), then the loser is
broken and must withdraw, and formations on the winning
side receive Blast markers for the casualties they suffered.

If the loser was already broken when it was assaulted then
the whole formation is destroyed, and ALL units in the
formation are removed from play as casualties. If the losing
formation is not broken then it becomes broken and may
withdraw (see 1.13.3).

Once any additional casualties have been removed, any
surviving units on the losing side must make an immediate
withdrawal as explained in the rules for broken formations
later on (see 1.13.3).

Finally, any formations belonging to the losing side that
were in a position to have lent support (ie, they were
within 15cms of an enemy unit in the assault) receive one
Blast marker each, even if they did not actually lend
support. These Blast markers represent the detrimental
effect on morale of seeing friends defeated in an assault.

There is no proviso for skipping the last step of "Loser Withdraws"... all friendly formations within 15cm of the losing formation *were* in a position to lend support, but did not, as the step was skipped, but still recieve their complimentary Blast marker...

I know how you can end the batrep...

And that is how I ended up in the hospital with Bill's foot up my anus.

Don't worry Mos, I had the same interpretation until I faced Dave in a tournament.

Silly rule changes.

That does make me feel better.  I KNEW those to be the rules but when the 2008 change came I read the errata, saw the "skip to" part and thought they modified it somehow.  I guess I should have gone back and read 1.12.8 in its entirety.

Oh well.  The good thing for me is I don't believe it has affected many games.  The bad thing is that there hasn't been that many games. :sigh:

Hey don't feel too bad. Up until our last game DS and I played it as you only get the BM is you actually lent support and your side lost.
