Just ask people who worked at GW for how much money they could take x ammount of kilograms in metal. You'll be disheartened.

The by-weight discount at GW was cancelled something like two years ago.

Ah...

Thanks Hena.

Well checking price of tin in last 5 years...

Thanks for the info... but I thought that 'White Metal' was an alloy containing more than just tin.

I can't get it to display, but when you set the chart to display the performance of tin as clocked against the British Pound over the past five years (Which is more relevant as GW is a British company), it seems to me that tin has increased in price much more in the UK than against the USD, and hasn't had the same drop-off in price recently as the USD has seen.

For GBP prices, where tin cost £3 per unit ~two and a half years ago, now it costs more than £9 per unit, and that's after a recent minor fall in price.

tripling at one point but not quadrupling.

At one point the price had (more than) quadrupled, but now it's sitting back at 'just' tripled... still, it's good to have the facts!

It's a combined thing:

tin price rise
metal price rise
other production costs rise
employees yearly wage rise
etc

Sometimes they have to increase.

Reaper Miniatures has started casting some of its stuff in the lead based formula it used to use.  Sure, it requires all sorts of extra labelling and reclassing as far as selling it and sending it to other countries, but the price reduction they offer on the miniatures is pretty good:

http://reapermini.com/P-65

Tin based white metal miniature: 4.49
Lead based P-65 miniature: 2.99

I don't know if they'll ever do the same for the stuff in thier CAV line that works with Epic, but it does go to show you the prices a miniature company could offer if they did switch back to lead based castings.

Weird... I can find the GW announcement that price increases are coming, but I can't find the usual itemized list as to what increased.  Can someone shoot me the link?

Price increase has already happened.

90% of metal models went up 1 price band. 5% of metal models went up 2 price bands. 5% of metal models stayed at the current price level.

There is no publically available list AFAIK.

Some other things went up in price, such as:

- All codexes/army books (+£3).
- Paint pots (+25p)
- Glue (+£1)
- Spray Paints (+£2)
- Army Cases (+£5 / +£10)
- Paint Sets (+£5)

Yeah, I knew it had already been inflicted upon us.  I'm just used to GW publishing a list of all the changes, I guess.  It saves time, is all.

I understand that dramatic increases in raw material costs mean that price rises are inevitable. But in GW's vase it is the scale of the increases on top of the already high price of models, Let's face it GW models are not cheap compared to other comparable products in gaming industry.

I dont like GW bashing because of the positive things theu have done for wider gaming community, They got me and many others here hooked on the hobby that we love. But it is now over 3 years since I have bought any W40k/WFB figures from GW and over 2 years since I have bought any Epic or BFG. The only thing I have bought from GW is a handful of LOTR blisters. Instead I have switched to other gaming systems and minature lines, and bought a limited amount of Epic/BFG/LOTR figures second hand.

I was thinking of actually going out and buying some WFB Mortals of Chaos as reinforcements for my exisitng army- I liked the look of new Chosen and Warriors with great weapons. But at these prices I may have second thoughts and reduce or even cancel my projected additions.

As an accountant GW's business decisions make less & less sense. Such a steep price rise in what is a luxury good when many consumers are becoming ever more cost concious due to the credit crunch. I can see steeper fall in sales and more stores closing. Many gaming companies have moved to excusively or mainly online sales. If GW loses more of it's high street stores then it loses it's USP amongst gaming companies.

Oh well........

Cheers

James

I just noticed something.  Even before the price rise, the Forge World Epic stuff is actually cheaper per tank than the same product from Specialist Games part of GW.

All prices converted to USD:
FW: Forge World
GW: GW US Prices
CA: GW Canadian Prices

Superheavy Tanks (Baneblade, Stormsword)
FW: $10.61 GW: $20.00 CA: $21.33

Basilisks & Manticores
FW: $2.94 GW: $5.00 CA: $5.67

Hydras
FW: $2.94 GW: $6.67 CA: $7.11

Chimeras
FW: $2.94 GW: $4.29 CA: $4.64

Eldar Falcons
FW: $4.21 GW: $5.67 CA: $6.18

And so on.

Pretty crazy how Forgeworld is cheaper than GW's regular stuff.
