Hi, another very basic question that betrays the fact that I'm still yet to play a game under these rules! So, those green order dice, are they useful and if so how many would you tend to use (for the record I'll be playing orcs v guard).

Thanks.

They're not nessesary in my experience.

Some guys like to use them to mark broken formations, formations that have acted that turn, or formations on overwatch.

What E&C said, plus WEs suffering from critical hit effects, and maybe also formations that were given march orders.

If you're gonna use them in a game, you'll need enough to mark about half of you're formations (5-6) if you just mark special condition. If you are using them to mark which formations have activated, then you'll need as many dice as you have formations (10-12).

But like E&C said, not absolutely necessary if you have a good memory. If you're like me, they help you with the bookkeeping for special circumstances.

During tournaments, I tend to find that they are very useful and even more useful if your opponent is using some form of marking their formations. When you are dealing with two armies that have upward of 14 activations each and a turn can take upto an hour, some markings are very useful. Also keeping a note of if a supreme commander's re-roll has been used.

So yes I find them very useful and I tend to have for each of my formations so its easy to see how many activations I have left in a turn.

I recently played a game against Ginger. He had as many dice as activations so he knew he hadn't missed anything each turn!

I use them to mark  formations either on overwatch, broken or used without using lots of different counters.

I don't use them, but only because I made counters using the same symbols on the dice.

For the people that use them, what do you use to denote what?

lightning and gear: activated
reticule: overwatch
four arrows: broken
!: Critical effect
3 arrows in line: march
arrow with explosion: unused by me

What Semaj said... we use them for special situations, as opposed to general marking, and we normally have no more than 2-4 on board at a time.  In a couple of rare cases I ran out of them back when I only had 6.  Since I picked up some extras in an EBay auction, I've never run out.

lightning and gear: Critical Hit (it is a mechanicus cog!)
reticule: overwatch
four arrows: broken
!: Special (i.e Slow Firing)
3 arrows in line: marched
arrow with explosion: Again, unused.

As Mephiston says, I use them to mark all formations that have activated, and keep the total dice elsewhere as a quick check on the number of activations remaining. For turn #1 this is usually un-necessary as it is pretty obvious what is left to activate (though failed activations are a nuisance especially if you get as many as me :p ), but in later turns it becomes more crucial, especially where opposing formations close on each other and you want to exploit positions where the enemy has activated.

lightning and gear: ? ? Unused
reticule: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Overwatch
four arrows: ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Broken
!: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Activated
3 arrows in line: ? ? ? ? March
arrow with explosion: Unused

Slow firing I would turn the affected model round.
Critical (Eldar holofields destroyed, fire etc) I usually remember, but I do like the suggestion of using one of the remaining two symbols.
Supreme Commander Re-rollI tend not to use :p , but when present, I place a distinctive dice nearby

In practice, I would suggest that tournament players tend to use some form of marker to record activations and other important events as an aide-memoire for both sides to avoid disputes, where this becomes less important in friendly games.

Somewhat off topic but its worth having a 'supreme commander' dice to track whether you have used it or not!

I've taken to using one. Helps when you fail to rally a formation and ask yourself "now, did I use the reroll?"

Thanks for so many replies! I think I'll pick some up when I place my next order with GW, if they help me reember stuff and keep the game flowing then they sound like just the kind of thing for me.

You could just download these and save ordering the order dice.

On a vaguely related note (well it's about game aids at least) I've just ordered some micro blast markers from Litko that look rather neat.
