Got in my first batle of the year today.  The best bit for me was that it was in a GW store and the manager had to tell customers what it was we were playing, and several people came to watch.  shocked that we were playing epic and saying how muc they love it.

the battle was a spur of the moment thing.  I had gone down to paint up my tech guard but now painting tables were free.  So Chris (someone I have gottenm intpo epic and now this forum) divided what I had into two equalish forces and he had his first battle of epic.

He had
2 infantry companies
a six strong tank company BTS
an infantry platoon (6 stands)
2 fire support platoon each with an extra guard infantry stand

I had
2 infantry companies
a six strong tank company BTS
3 infantry platoon (6 stands each)
1 fire support platoon each with an extra guard infantry stand

As you can see we weren't quite using roper army lists but were out for a spin and training a newbie.

we also only played with a blitz and one other objective each.

The battle started with me failig my first three activations  :( , followed by failing at least one more each turn), but my experiance allowed me to slowly grind down the new recruit. until he only had his infantry platoon guarding his blitz left, at the end of turn 3.

I had to admit that I thought I would lose the game.  My multiply small, lightly armed formations didn't indear themselves to me, coupled with my inabilityto command them (we decided not to have any commissars since I didn't have any painted up, being tech guard and all).  However my knowledge of how the formations work together, my better uderstanding of the rules (Chris had forgotten about supporting fire in engagemnts) and Chris' dertimination to attack my infantry formation intrenched in a ruin building allowed me to win with BLitz and they shall not pass Vs nothing.

The battle did bring up one question though.  Formations that engage do not get a cover save, since they are running around and stuff, but why do untis that counter charge get a cover save?  We decided that those that moved wouldn't get any.

Overall a good start to the gaming year, and soon Chris will have his Orks for me to fight, we might even get others to start collecting.

Oh the irony.

The manager of the GW Brent Cross store has asked me for an Epic Intro Game.

Considering a decent chunk of his job involves running 40k intro games all day, I find that ironic. :p

Let me know when that is and I will make my way down if I can!

@Ragnarok
I think I would play it that the defenders get cover if they are still in the building after their countercharge, but not if they are now outside.

@ E&C, CS - count me in too, but remember to allow for the store closing time - or negotiate a late night :p

Cheers

I hadn't thought about it, but that's not a bad idea. I wonder if they'll let us play on the weekend.
