I always loved those guys in the old RT days. I just love the concept of penal troops period. For those who remember the old FASA game Centurian (great game) they had some nice penal troop rules and a great novel about them too (and no they werent heroes...)
Anyhow, there is some discussion at the EA Boards about how to represent Penal troops in an IG Force. My thoughts are that they are best represented by having them available as a Company Upgrade to bolster your Infantry Company in a FF/CC role.
I have tried them once, but sadly them were wiped out before coming anywhere near enemy troops. Mind you they died before the guardsmen in their company so they served their purpose in one sense. By their deaths do they serve Him-on-Earth!
Anyhow, the link is here if you are interested: http://www.eyeofterror.com/oz/newslette ... etterX.htm

Firepower issue #3, pg. 78, "Penal Legions". Only one page, but some interesting stuff, including Human Bombs. Is this archived somewhere on line ?

Nice list but I'm not sure about how the Cyborg Berserkers fit in the picture. Who would waste valuable technology on criminals when nearly the same effect can be achieved with frenzon dispensers. Then again, AM regularly transforms criminals to servitors so I guess it's OK.

Tas, I could send you a copy of the page when I send your G/W stuff, as part of your "good bloke" bonus discount ! ? ?Let me know. ?Seems to me like a good use of the criminal element. And don't forget certain cultures on this planet use "human bombs", currently (muslim fanatics - last week) and in the past (Japanese Kamikazi/Bansai charges - WWII). For some ... everyday is a good day to die ...

Mate that would be brilliant- thanks.
Could I also be really, really cheeky and ask for a copy of the Mega Wars articles from CJ as well? ?I have the City wars one, but would like a look at the Mega Wars thing so I can push on with those mini-Campaign rules. ?Really appreciated mate.
And yes, its a good way to use criminals- its either than or a firing squad or summary execution from the Commissar after all...

No problem, Tas ! I'll include those with your upcoming order. Penal units, Commissars, firing squad, sounds like a day in Stalin's Russia ... How soon we forget !

Just doing my part to further US-Aussie relations ! And even after Uncle Joe Stalin died in '53, it still took the Commies almost forty years to figure out that this Capitalism stuff ain't too bad. Of course a lot of Commissars had to get real jobs ! No worries about that in the Imperium ...

Hi!
I once heard "communism" was just a longer more painful route to reach capitalism....

If that is so, our Russian Brothers, still have a way to go. They're still trying to figure out how we beat the Russian armed and trained Iraqi Army twice so decisively. And how we got Afghanistan under control in 3 months with a small force, and they couldn't do it in 10 years with a much larger OOB.

Hi!
I remember Centurion, nice game system from FASA, although somewhat cumbersome.
C-in-C make the models now.

Yes, I remember those models, they were interesting ... and very futuristic.

Does anyone have ideas how to model penal infantry?
Or which figures would make good proxies?

IIRC, they look a lot like IG. The Old Guard gunners would make good Penal Troops, Human Bombs etc. ... I used mine as gunners (doh!) and Cultists with 1 E40K Cultist on the base and 4 gunners.

Hi!
I think the best ones would be the Pan African Union units from GZG. They look very "irregular" and would be suitable for a penal legion.
