Comparable firepower to:

3 Phoenixes - 400 points
3 Firelords - 450 points
3 Marauders - ~400 points (estimated)

Your contention is that a ~20% increase in damage capacity (counting crits), no possible reduction in firepower until it's completely destroyed, and the best AA defense of any bomber formation in the game is worth 0-15% increase in points.

A flight of Marauders have better AA... two AA5+ shots, versus 1...

As far as I'm concerned, AA is not a nessesity.

This craft is a dedicated heavy bomber, why not disallow the autocannons from firing in AA mode.

Then it's a superior ground attack bomber, but it'd be minced by concentrated fighter attacks...

I'm starting to agree with Chris that your play group must simply not use enough air to have learned all the manipulative tricks.

15cm AA range is nearly worthless against anything but Fightabommas.  Even Tbolts have the option of risking 1 shot from a formation so as to get all their firepower or sitting back and just taking the 30cm shots.

30cm AA, otoh, cannot be avoided by any interceptor in the game except the Helltalon (which is an argument for another day).  It's easily better than 3x 15cm shots.

This craft is a dedicated heavy bomber, why not disallow the autocannons from firing in AA mode.

That's a valid option.

The question is whether you're more concerned about getting the points and abilities down to your target range or representing the stats from other games (40K/AI).

I'm concerned with the game in this order:

- Is it balanced?
- Does it represent the background properly?
- Does it mesh with the rules in 40k & AI?

Not everything in Epic has to represent something from WW2. :)

These things could be more like C-130 SPECTREs.

The weapon arcs are front/left/right... so no rear gun anyway (Which is the best place to put AA on a bomber...

I do not think it matches up to well with the AC-130.  It matches up more with the well the greatest strategic bomber ever - the B-52!

But it isn't a ground attack bomber.

It a huge lumbering plane meant to destroy whole swathes of buildings.

The side wing guns can't even fire down very far and I think that from their design they are meant as self-defence weapons. If it was a ground attack craft I think they would have positioned the guns differently.
