07-01-07 Updated Information here --> Epic Artwork Competition

Deadline extended by request to July 31st.  This will probably be the only extension, however, so count on the end of the month to be the last chance to get anything in!

We are looking for artwork submissions for a fan created Epic Supplement entitled Epic: Raiders (coming October 2007). ?The supplement will contain the army lists for the Minervan Armored Regiment (Imperial Guard), the Dark Eldar, and the Necron, along with modeling tips for how to do scratch builds, scenarios, model pics, and a full blown body of 'fluff'.

Please send your submissions (or link to your submissions) along with your full name to moscovian@hotmail.com.
The Prizes!
To spur you folks to new heights, we the list developers are offering First and Second Place prizes, and we are doing what we can to create a third place.

PRIZE GRAB BAG
? Epic scale 6mm Necron Warriors (the old Chaos Androids), which will be
unbased and unpainted.
? Epic scale Pylon scratch built by Necron Champ Corey himself.
? Epic scale scratch built Necron Warbarque - the newest edition to the
Necron list.
? Epic scale ?Beatle Back? Imperial Titan, fully painted by Ben Skinner.
? $25 US in purchases from Games Workshop
While you may not play Epic, there are a bunch of people out there who would love to get their mittens on these goodies.
1st Place Winner will have his choice of two prizes. In addition, his or her artwork could be featured on the cover of Epic: Raiders and the winner will receive a printed, bound copy of the Epic: Raiders supplement.
2nd Place Runner Up will receive one prize of his or her choice (after the 1st place winner chooses) and could have his or her artwork be featured on the inside cover
position. In addition the 2nd place winner will receive a printed, bound copy of the Epic: Raiders supplement.
3rd Place Runner Up will receive one prize of his or her choice (after the 1st & 2nd place winners choose). In addition the 3rd place winner will receive a printed, bound copy of the Epic: Raiders supplement. NOTE: Third place prize will only be granted if we
receive more than 25 submissions.

All submissions must be either scanned and sent in a readable format (jpg, bmp, etc) in an email (moscovian@hotmail.com) or mailed physically to me to be scanned. ?Since this endeavor will ultimately be available as a pdf file, all artwork will be compared and judged in their electronic format. ?Keep this in mind as (for example) sketches, while they may look fantastic on paper, will suffer if they are too light or not scanned properly. ?Fair warning! ?I am not responsible if you send something to me and the scanning job sucks.

By submitting your artwork to us, you are giving us ownership of the image, in whole or in part, and permission to use it freely from now until forever in a free publication. ?You will never profit from it as we will never profit from it. ?Even if you do not win the contest, we still may use your artwork inside the body of the supplement or in a future publication. ?Of course GW ultimately owns everything - just ask them. :p Seriously though,

All submissions must be original artwork done by YOU, not just found by you. ?If you are not an artist and know somebody who is, you cannot submit their work (although whatever nefarious arrangements you make with that artist to get them to submit something are entirely up to you). ?All artwork will be properly credited in the publication, of course.

Mediums: We are not picky. ?They can be photoshop generated, pencil sketches, painted, CGI, whatever. ?As long as the image can be ultimately loaded as a jpeg file, you are good.

You may make as many submissions as you wish, but please make them as appropriate to the project as possible. ?Here is some ideas what we are looking for:

*Dark Eldar
*Necrons
*Minervan Armored Regiment
*Tallarn Light Armored Regiment
*Desert landscape
*Inclusion of Epic scale units not commonly found in 40k scale (Pylons, Aeonic Orb, Slavebringers, Barge of Pleasure, Stormblades, Lemun Russ formations, etc.)
*Battle shots
*Artwork that includes more than one army type

*The artwork does not have to meet all the criteria above (or even any of it!), but this will give you some idea of the direction we are looking.

All submissions will be considered and judged by Corey Perez (Necron Champion), Ben Skinner (Tallarn Armored List Developer), and the Dark Eldar team (Frank, Erik, and myself). ?Work can be submitted from the day of this post until 23:59 hours on July 15th, 2007. ?We may extend the contest as late as August 30th if there are not a sufficient number of entries (at least 20).?

Until then, please do not post your submissions anywhere else. ?FYI this contest will be posted on other forums, so just be aware that there is only one contest, not one per forum.

Anyone wanting to assist the project can PM me and I'll let you know what gaps are left to fill. ?One way would be to donate anything to the 'prize pool'. ?Even a lone Lemun Russ tank (combined with the other prizes) could help encourage the right artwork.

Lastly, if you have any questions about the contest, the 'look' of a vehicle, the outline of the story, etc. feel free to PM or post here.

Thanks for your interest and I look forward to seeing your work!

William Sturtevant / Moscovian
Dark Eldar Army Developer

I forgot to mention - when emailing me please be sure you put the word 'Epic' somewhere in your subject line so your submission / question doesn't get junked.  If the file is too big to send, email me and we'll work something out. :)

This is a great idea Moscovian, hope it goes well!

Incidentally, on the sending large files front; you tried www.yousendit.com ?  Very handy website for transferring large files free.

Or preferable better than the baran war (raven guard, we came, we saw, we died like muppets not understanding the tactical uses of thunderhawks).

Oh and why tallern? Why not go the whole hog and have necrons, DE and........ Squats!

I can assure you Squats will not be in the supplement.   :)

We decided on Raiders because it fit all three army lists well.  Dark Eldar are obvious raiders, Necron fall into the category well.  Tallarn Armored nickname is 'Desert Raiders', so there you have it...

There is a storyline, but we're not giving away too much too soon.  If you PM me I'll go over the general outline if that will get the creative juices flowing.

As a bit of shameless pluggery  :
I happen to have quite a few Tallarn models painted up. Unfortunately I don't have any of the other forces intended for the book so I can't do a full scale battle scene. I suppose I could do some kind of one sided "army on the offensive" kind of thingy though if that fits with anything you had in mind. Anyway let me know if you need any pics of individual models for other parts of the book and I'll be happy to help out :;):

OrangeSM and Warmaster Nice, I will PM you both! Thanks for the interest.

The biggest way for anyone to help is to spread the word around.  Even when you have contact with the 40K players you can let them know.  Working out a trade for the prizes would be a fine way to encourage some artwork from non Epic players.

By the way, we got our first entry this weekend!  I wish I could share it with all of you but we'll be keeping them confidential until the end of the contest.

Just a quick question on the background.

Without giving too much away, are there any other forces engaged as well as the big three (from a background and scenario point of view)?

For example any legios marine chapter, inquisitors, poking their noses in?

Also, is it just derserts you want?  were any other climates fought over?

I don't think you could go wrong on the climate of the planet.  Although the bulk of the fiction will take place in the desert and canyons.  Industrial mining colony cityscape could also be used come to think of it, especially if you want to do artwork of the Dark Eldar pillaging a civilian population.

The planet holds civilian mining colonies, and also used by the IG for staging its forces to nearby theatres of war.

The story will include the Tallarns in general, but the focus will obviously be on the Armored Regiment.  AMTL will be represented as they are part of the staged force, as well as Imperial Navy.  Check out the Tallarn Armored army list and you'll get a good idea of what is included.  Evil & Chaos made every attempt to include models from FW and GW.  All but one is still in print.

If you want some other element, just throw it in to the work.  As long as it doesn't dominate the artwork then I don't think any of us would mind.  If you have a specific idea in mind that you don't want to 'give away', just email or PM me and I'll give you some extra pointers.

Keep in mind that I am -above all other concerns- looking for something of quality.   If the content suffers a little for an excellent artwork idea, then so be it.  The other developers may feel differently, but my guess is you should be fine.

Other hints -

There will be no static wraithgate / webway portal in the story.  That means the Dark Eldar are doing it the old fashioned way - from dropships.

The Tallarn Armored will be the heroes.  No big mystery there, especially with two 'bad guys'.  Whether they win is still up for debate.

The Necron will be the big gorilla on the block in the fiction.  If you had to include one Necron unit, you would not go wrong by using the Aeonic Orb.

Of course if I were to do the artwork we would end up with stick figures on a big black & white hill.  :p

There really is a legitimate reason for not having Squats.  I had actually considered it since I think ePilgrim's fiction on the Demiurg could easily be tweaked back to being Squats.  However, IMO good science fiction always goes back to human interaction.  Without that as the center of a story the reader will have a more difficult time relating.

When E&C volunteered his list and his efforts, I knew we had a winning combo (at least story wise).

I agree that there really wasn't a good reason to include them. I was joking anyway.

I figured you were joking, but I didn't want to offend the other Squat-loving folks out there by glibbly dismissing their army.

The Inquisition force was seriously considered but we ultimately decided against it (not because it is a bad list - just that it didn't fit well with what we had already committed to).
