I have a big problem for a little miniature, and I hope someone can help.

I dorked it up, but good, because I did a series of things I almost never do that culminated in a complete disaster. :oo

1)  I took 2 batches of figs out to the garage to spray with different finishes.

2)  I didn't make sure the area was well-lit.

3)  When I switched from the first batch (priming with a can almost empty) to the second batch (matte varnish in a can that sprays FAST), I did not do a "test spray" before pointing it at the figs.

Result:  I put a huge amount of varnish on the fig before I realized what was happening.  The varnish ran down into the details (of course) and dried white.

As a bonus, this was a conversion for the painting contest.  It's a slaanesh Landraider patterened after Tuffskull's "40,000 Watts of War" miniature.  It's painted in black and pink.

I would like some idea of how to fix this without a massive repainting project.

I'm pretty sure a black wash will fix all the black parts fairly quickly, as it would cover the white varnish down in the cracks and crevices.  However, the Pink areas and the noise marine standing on top will pretty much need to be re-painted.

So...

Any ideas?

Or am I just stuck? :{

Neal,

Tough call. I haven't thought of anything yet.

When I'm not satisfied with a paint job, I strip it and start over.  It's draconian, but it works for me ...  :;):

...However, the varnish might be rather difficult to get off, depending on what sort you used Neal... :L

Hi!

If the coat of varnish is not too thick, perhaps a coat of primer on that will let you paint them without problems.

If its too thick you'll need to apply a solvent to get the excess off. Unfortunately I'm not sure what a good solvent would be for varnish. :(

Getting a tough layer of varnish off a plastic mini can apparently be done by painting on nail varnish remover and doing it layer by layer - It will take an age and I haven't tried it myself, but it might be worth a try.

Sorry, I haven't got anything else constructive to add to what has been said above, but, at least, your conversion work will be OK if you have to strip it and repaint it.

Dang.

I guess I'm going to try the paint-over first and see how it starts to shape up.

The varnish is not so thick it obscured the detail, just enough to turn white.  Also, it's matte, so there shouldn't be a problem with a second coat of paint adhering.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll let you know how it goes and/or post final pics.

Hi!

Something similar happen to me sometime again but with pain spilling on the models, as you mention it was not thick enough to abscure detail and a prime and another paint job work fine in that case.

Good luck!
