Hi there,

I am thinking of getting into epic, either Epic Armagedon or NETEpic. Anyways I have noticed that in all the old Epic pictures the bases which infantry are mounted are different from the newer bases. The old bases have two infantry in the back, one in the middle and two in the front. The new bases simply have a row of five infantry. What is the difference game wise ? Can I use both base set ups in both NETEpic and Epic Armageddon ? Is it advantageous to try and track down the old bases or are the newer ones just as acceptable ?

Thanks
Christof

Basing in Epic: Armageddon follows these simple rules:

- A stand may be no more than 40mm and no less than 5mm across in any direction.

- A stand must be at least 20mm across in one direction (ie, a 5mm by 5mm stand is not allowed, but a 5mm by 20mm stand would be okay).

- Stands representing infantry units must have at least three infantry models and may not have more than seven. Infantry mounted on bikes or horses must have between two and four models mounted on each base.

- Stands representing artillery must have between one and two artillery pieces and up to six crew models.

Both the old and new bases fall within these parameters and you are, in fact, allowed to use any kind of custom base that falls within them, not just squares or rectangles.

Many people mount their troops on coins or irregularly cut plasticard, I've even gone so far as to base my Tyranids on plastic hexagon bases!

The guidelines for basing allow for a lot of creativity.

It really does not matter which bases you use, I use both. And if you want to play Epic:A, then follow the rules Chroma listed.  That's what it says in the rules ... :)

Indeed, for EA, any base within the above restrictions is fine. To answer your next question... there are both advantages and disadvantages to both types (again, in EA), and they are very minor, so they pretty much cancel each other out.

Choose Armageddon, you won't be disappointed!
Had to say that.

E:A is a good system ... but from a functional standpoint ...  Square bases are harder to paint the troops ! :)

Try both! I still can't decide which I like better!

Very true. In fact, you dont need to decide. Both systems have free rules to download. Both use the same minis on the same bases at the same scale. There is absolutely no reason why one set of miniatures cant be used to play both games with zero extra effort or expense!

About the only thing dividing the two model-wise is unit sizes. You may need a few extra for a formation in one system than the other. For example, in NetEpic, chaos space marines come in detachments of five units, whereas the Black Legion list has them in formations of eight units. Khorne demon engines come in groups of three in NetEpic and groups of four in E:A. Other than issues like that, you're good to go!

I concur. My minis pull double duty.  :p
