D12's are better from a "Platonic solids rule" point of view. D20's and D6's are good too, for the same reason. By the same measure D10's bother all the good little OCD boys and girls.

I think that D6's are okay, given that there are often multiple rolls for a given action. Like in shooting when there's D6 to-hit D6 to-save (and also D6 to wound in 40k/fantasy). A side effect of the that is that it produces a nice bell curve for the probablity (which, admittedly, multiple rolls of any die would also give). Also, dots are better than numerals.

But, these are just my opinions

I used to have at least 20 or so D10s of all sorts of colours for Vampire: the Masquerade and Inquisitor.

But, I believe that one of the main reasons GW just wants to stay away from other dice is the massive cost of D10s (or D12s or whatever). Obviously GW doesn't want to put potential customers away with high prices... Hahaha! :D :p

Ahem. Seriously though, there's a certain amount of logic to the idea that D6s are simple to comprehend, and if stuck you can usually scrounge enough D6s for a game! Whereas if you forget your D10s you're screwed. (Of course, the side effect is that Monopoly and Risk never seem to have the dice in the boxes any more, but hey...)

Plus when you really need more detail, a 2D6 (or more!) table is always possible with, as mentioned before, that nice curve.

Lord =I=

The joy of using a d6 based system is that you can almost use real buckets of dice! :(8:

Who do you know has more than a couple of d10's? Do you know any set of more than three d10's, d20's or any other dice not d6?

The fun of a d6 based system is rolling 20 dice at once & counting your kills.

I do not know, when I was playing d20 D&D I had one character who rolled eight d20s at a time. I used to own eight with differnt colors for different "adjustments" and loved rolling the whole batch at one time.

My GM called it the Sarah Diefall.  :p

Oh and anyone who played Mage, Vampire, or L5R would have quite a few d10s.  :D

As a keen WWII 6mm player I have buckets.

i dont think finer degrees of difference are worthwhile at this scale. D6 has all the intuitive degrees of difference you need:
2+ : likely
3+ : reasonably likely
4+ : fifty fifty
5+ : reasonably unlikely
6+ : unlikely

+1 on a D6 makes a difference. +1 on D10 might not.

Also more dice = smoother probability, and its easier to scan the pips on mass D6s than decipher numerals on mass D10s.

Must be the ADHD in my head, but I disagree. I find the pips more work.  :p

Other then that, I think this is all moot as both GW and the powers to be on NetEpic has said no to the idea of anything other then d6s.  :)

This was proposed MANY times for netepic. GW is fixated on the d6. Which is a shame. There are some good mechanics based on the decimal system. It gives you more leeway for bonuses than with a d6.

I used a decimal system for my Heresy system. I found it to be robust.

I have always liked a decimal or % system myself. I like the ability to offer slight veriations that a d6 system just can not model.

But then again, just because a system uses d10 or even d20 mean it uses the veriables wisely. ?:p

dafrca

Hi!

True. But I find the die types you mention permit that each variable added can be a relatively small, but cumulative help to the roll.

On a d6 a +1 is a quite large change in percentage. On percentage die or decimal die the percentage increment is less so.

I would like to see it, but D10s for Epic, or any other GW game for that matter, will never happen. Sometimes I think that the company that supplies dice to GW produces only D6s and is giving GW kickback not to switch from D6s. :D It would take a major rewrite, even for NetEpic, to work in D10s for everything.

One thing that I started working on many years ago (and should dig out and resume work on) is rewriting the Titan critical hit tables to D10 to make them a little more resilient. I've never liked the fact that once you strip away the shields, you can kill a Warlord from the front simply by rolling a "6" for critical damage on the reactor table. A 1-in-6 chance seems too high to me.

Hi!

Thats what I did in Heresy. The d10 makes damage tables and such give titans more resilience.

Yep, that is why in RPGs I always liked the % dice. Gave a wide range of effects from hardly any (+2%) to major (+25%) and many stops along the way.  :D
