As the culmination of a number of different threads here, Gaunts Ghost and I are running a campaign - my Eldar against his Imperial Guard - and I thought that you may be interested in the progress so far.

The campaign rules are still being worked on, and minor changes are being made as a result our testing. In addition, my Eldar list is one of my own creation, and so non-standard or typical formations may occur.

Anyway, a map was created using Fractal Terrains (an essential package for this kind of thing).

Setup looked like this:

Imperial forces are designated by red pins, with Imperial held sectors in red, while the Eldar are indicated by purple sectors and pins.

Movement then occurred as both sides set about carving out portions of the continent to set battle lines.

At this point, I decided to test the Imperial forces, and launched an incursion into an Imperial held sector, with Imperial defences (sector 76).

The battle table indicated a minor clash, with the vanguard forces from both sides engaging. This was not good for me, and on top of this, the sector housed a Comms Tower, currently in Imperial hands and therefore giving me a -1 to activation tests.

I had just a Guardian Warhost (Farseer, 3 Defenders, 4 Guardian Storm Squads and 4 Wave Serpents), and a Jet Bike Troupe. The Imperials fielded a Storm Trooper platoon with Valkyries, a Hellhound Squadron and an Infantry Platoon.

The table indicated an Escalating Engagement - and please note the number of AT weapons that I (the Eldar) had available!

The game was short, with my bikes surging forward in an attempt to get early kills, but then losing the initiative in the second turn and getting jumped by the Valkyries. They made a tactical withdrawal. The rest of the game saw my Guardian Host being chased off the board. In a one-off game, I would have simply thrown everything forward, but this being a campaign I really did not want to waste front-line units. The only upside was that, while the Imperials dogged the Guardian Host, the Jet Bikes did a one-eighty and pounced on the Valkyries, hitting them in a firefight. The result wiped out the Jet Bikes, but also took out three of the Valkyries and a couple of Storm Trooper stands.

In the end, the Eldar was pushed back out of the sector by the Imperials.

The end of turn seven looked like this:

Turn Seven

Subsequent turns led to more moving around to try to gain an advantage.

Turn Eight

Turn Nine

We are now in turn eleven, and a much larger battle will be fought at our next meeting.

Tom - Gaunts Ghost is a local to where my family currently live... and where most of my Epic is stored.

Over the small battle a couple of questions came up:

1. Can troops disembark from their transports, into a building? We said yes to this, as the troops can be placed within 5cm of the transport, and if the transport is next to the building we allowed it. However, we also played that troops could not embark directly from a building, as the transport vehicle must 'run them over' to pick them up, and clearly cant enter the building itself. However, we played that infantry on a (for example) March action can make a single movement out the building, and then the vehicles can pick them up in their second movement of the action.

2. Troops being in destroyed transports. I am sure that I read this somewhere, but simply could not find the reference in the heat of the battle. I am fairly sure that troops in a transport which is destroyed get a single save to survive. If this transport is destroyed by a MW then they are automaticall destroyed. If the transport is a flier then they are destroyed, but a Skimmer is counted as a standard land transport... is this correct?

3. A strange situation came up in an assault. My Jet Bikes engaged the Valkyries. Both formations lost a couple of units, but the combat resolution is a draw (meaning another round is fought). But, both formations had recieved enough blast markers to break them. The rules state that blast markers are not counted until the end of the engagement, but does this mean until the end of the entire thing ( as we played it) or are they in effect at the end of that round, forcing both sides to withdraw and no second round to be fought?

Thanks.

1 - We say yes to troops leaving transports and entering cover.
Howevre we also say (and agree with you) about the pick up. The transport has to touch the infantry so they must move first (unless the cover ain't impassable and the vehicle is happy risking it).

2 - Troops get their regular save (so terminators would get 4+ RA), if you lack a save you get a 'cover save' of 6+, MW affects these saves as normal (so say a marine wouldn't get one).
If you can deathstrike an Ork Battlefortress loaded down with Nobz, rejoice (oh a great tourney moment that).

3 - I've always been a bit hazey abou assaults (normally doing it very well or very badly so these things don't come up) but I'd always side with continue fighting.

Coll looking maps C/S.

You'll have to do a sticky about Fractal Terrains- I can see that being popular for many campaigns for differeing game systems.

Good luck in your campaign.

Cheers

James
