Hi,
it's been a long time since I posted here, just want to ask what would be the best format for a nice demo game of EA.

My local group wants a demo game and I'm hesitating between a big narrative battle showcasing all the misnis we can find, with multiple players on each side, or instead, many small (minigedon?) games with single players.

What has work well for you guys?

Something I've been musing about how to demo Epic at shows.
The big battle looks great if you wanted to do an eye candy game. The minigeddon style game is a great introduction to gaming and getting people involved. I have a slight leaning towards Minigeddon style as one could show off a number of differnt cool armies for people to choose from to have a 'quick' game. Not only will they get use to a few of the basic mechanics but can also see that a playable force need not be all that unattainable.
Personally I might offer up a couple of armies of original figures, and then a few armies of suitable proxies. Nothing worse than the "look at these cool models (but you can't get them very easily)".

As a beginner myself I would say start with minigeddon and then shock and awe everyone with a huuuge narrative game a bit further down the lane when the rules are a bit more understood ;) also make sure to present where to find miniatures and maybe even supply a few helpfull starterlists for people who want to buy and paint their own armies. For newbme I find this is the biggest hurdle to get over. What should I get and where can I get it?

Yeah, i got 3/4 local guys into it with minigeddon to start with.

Have to be careful with army selection though - some "competitive" minigeddon armies can table an opponent in 2 turns if the player doesnt understand the game, and that can be demoralising.

I'd start with some standard guard vs orks or similar (mirror match guard can be good) before getting assault heavy with marines or eldar! :-) Good luck!

I find Minigeddon games rather tricky for introductional games.

If you do not have initiative 1, you might have turns without passing an activation roll.

Everything you do and every loss has more far reaching consequences and often enough a game is over in turn 2.

I also miss the sweeping movements of an ordinary game - we don't use drop/air assault lists much.

I prefer 2k games for introductionary games or larger multiplayer games with an experienced "moderator" on each side.

I agree with Brumbaer, 2k is a good size, lets you use the big toys and play with retaining initiative

Minigeddon is good to hone rules knowledge although I find the format dull and boring myself, its also not really visually that 'epic' looking.....

I think the most important thing is to make sure there are experienced players around to offer advice, explain why certain moves/actions are taken and generally hold hands as required, also you need to let them win their first game, in my experience it takes a long time before new players start winning games by themselves ;)

Never played minigeddon so did not realise some of the drawbacks. Sounds like 2k intro games may pitch about right though?

2k is fine, 3k is also fine providing you're willing to help from the other side of the table, also letting them use titans is generally a good idea, less to worry about, just stomp around and shoot! ;)

Depends how much time you have. The good thing with minigeddon is there are less rules to learn and games are faster. Though as kyuss points out its more of a crapshoot. Randomly I learned playing 5k as that allowed my brother and I to use all the models not sure I recommend it!

Agreed guys; It really depends on what you are trying to achieve here.
  • If you and an experienced player are 'demoing' the dame to others:- a 3K game with all the elements, titan, air etc.
  • To teach people the basic rules very quickly:- Minigeddon (with an experienced umpire / guide).
  • To teach people the game as a whole :- 2k or 3k with pre-defined armies, again with an experienced guide / umpire.
  • Depending on the amount of time available and level of knowledge, it could be worth going through some of the training scenarios beforehand.

In all cases, I would recommend 'basic' armies to ensure a minimum of 'special rules' - so possibly Marines or IG vs Orks.

Thanks for the input!

I'm demoing this to a bunch of 40k/FoW players that are comfortable with any rulesets, so I guess I'll go for the full rules, get some nice toys on the table and make sure the games flow nicely.

Will update with pics when it happens!

FOW players should get epic very quickly. You are probably good to go straight into a 3k with some big toys. :-D

Black Legion without any demons make for a very good basic army too (marine status but without ATSKNF)

Loyalists against Chaos Marines is a classic combination and good for low-activation point values. Easy to build up a small force of each using old (and generally not that scarce) SM plastics, too.
