So after a year or so of having bought the initial components and a decade (?) of collecting epic ruins,
I've finally put myself to work on my new table: a cityfight table.
The Theme of a cityfight table is of course ruins and lots of them. Add in a few craters and other blown up stuff and your well on your way.
Since I've made modular terrain before (last table got destroyed due to wear and tear), I wanted to make another one.
This time though, I would make it stronger, better and Bigger!

The table will be quite crowded and so will probably favor more infantry based armies, but that is one of the ideas behind it.
We have already tested the table a few times and made some adjustments for better gameplay.
There will be "light rubble" (5+ cover, counts as open terrain and will not block LOS) and regular rubble.

It all started with a rough sketch:

The mock up (what we used to playtest).
The surface is made from hi-density insulation foam, glued on a hardboard surface.

I added holes for craters and used cardboard for sidewalks.

One of the adjustments to the plan was to make some of the ruins removable from the table, or a least exchangeable.
To do this, I made a few hardboard cut outs. It is a bit thick for epic, but It's cheap and doesn't warp.

A hill (or the start of one, I'm not yet satisfied with this one, might need to make a new one

Started work on moddeling the craters

To be continued..

Wow, very impressive! How did you make the crater holes?

Cheers guys,

The layout will be partly fixed. The modular tiles are 30 x 60 cm, to have maximum variation. Some of the ruins however will be removable. This way, I can increase or decrease the density of terrain.

The Craters:
I first drew circles on the foam. Then cut the rough shapes with a Stanley knife. The next step was to sand them with some fine sandpaper (this is where the hi density foam really shines. You really don't want to do this with normal quality foam).
After that, I took some modeling clay to sculpt the crater sides. This has to dry for 24 hours, and when its dry, I will apply a thin layer of PVA glue, to strengthen the ridges and create a better adhesion with the foam.

Mate,

Looks cool, you are a man after my own heart. I love a good city battle and have made a modular table to work with. Keep up the cracking good work, looking forward to seeing more.

Cheers
Aaron

Alright, time for a small update.

Due to a spell of good weather here in Holland, I didn't get to do as much as i would have liked. Some scale 1:1 modeling around the house was needed, and I prefer to do painting with non acrylics outside as much as possible.

Anyway, I've sealed the craters and I've started work on the first ruins. I'm not sure if I want to give them a second sealing layer for extra strength. Any good tips?

Planning how the ruins need to look actually took me allot of time, but the good news is that I still have enough sprue's left to get all of them done.

I've also got some brick plastic card as finish for the canal sides, but unfortunately, it's to small for my liking. It's the right scale, but way to small to effectively paint. back to the drawing board.

-+ Resurrection complete +-

Hi everyone, after a long vacation to procrastination island, I've finally regained motivation to continue with my city fight table. Having done a few bits in between this huge hiatus, the table is still far from finished!
I have clearly underestimated the immense amount of work that is needed for something like this.

anyway, a few pictures before I continue texturing.

Yes, this is looking very good indeed. As someone who has a city setup, I'm following this one with much interest - it's always good to see possibilities to improve on what I have. ;D
