Quote (deathlynx @ 10 2005 June,11:35) | Quote (dafrca @ 09 2005 June,19:41) | Which, Traveller or Harrington or Both? |
Uhhh...Concidering I started the thread by praising Harrington I think it's Traveller...But I could just be confused ? | You are asking me to think after 24:00?
That is unfair.
But to answer your question. Traveller is a role playing game that came out in 1977 and was published by GDW. Marc Miller (the author and key developer) created a background that over the years has grown quite extensive. It was not only one of the first RPGs but as far as I know the first SciFi RPG.
Over the years it has had various editions, been redone in GURPS, d20, and an additional GDW house system. Between the four rules systems and the licensing out of the background there are literly thousands of products and game out there. Do a search on ebay for Traveller in the Games section, you will see.
Many of the ways ship to ship, the whole Navy/Royalty/World of Harrington felt very much like the old Traveller.
Here is the Wekipedia entry for Traveller. It should help you get a start of an understanding if you are interested. If you do want to know more let me know and I will be glad to pass more along your way.

Oh and now that I know that The Honor Harrington Series was first published in the early 1990's I guess I know who inspired whom.

Hi Guys,
That reminds me that I reread the old classic "Uller Uprising" by H. Beam Piper just a few months ago.
The story of "Uller Uprising" is based on the Sepoy Mutiny from actual history and has a number of great sci-fi twists including a planet with a corrosive atmosphere, non-carbon-based lifeforms, giant lizards, skyships, native levies and fissionable (atomic) weapons.
GREAT BOOK!
I highly recommend it.
Shabbat Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

You know, the way this thread has shifted, we should move it to the General forum. Maybe one of the guys with the "power" could do it for us.

Nearly fell off there...
About to start reading Stephen Baxter's Voyage.
The story of the US manned space programme of the 1970s and 1980s - as it should have happened. Kennedy is shot in 1963, but not killed, only invalided and forced to retire. Under his uniting influence, the first manned Ares probe lifts off for Mars in 1986.
I really enjoyed Baxter's The Light of Other Days which is a great book.
'Space is what keeps everything from being in the same place. Right?' With these words Hiram Patterson, head of the giant media corporation OurWorld, launches the greatest communications revolution in history. With OurWorld's development of wormhole technology, any point in space can be connected to any other, faster than the speed of light. Realtime television coverage is here: earthquakes and wars, murders and disasters can be watched, exactly as they occur, anywhere on the planet. Then WormCams are made to work across time as well as space. Humanity encounters itself in the light of other days. We witness the life of Jesus, go to the premiere of Hamlet, solve the enigmas that have baffled generations. Blood spilled centuries ago flows vividly once more - and no personal treachery or shame can be concealed. But when the world and everything in it becomes as transparent as glass and there are no more secrets, people find new ways to gain vengeance and commit crime, and Hiram Patterson finds new ways to keep his Machiavellian schemes secret.

Finished Flint's "Islands" ... not bad, but Romans, Greeks & Persians vs. Indians ? Muskets, some kind of artillery, telegraph, steamboats ? Different, but the writing was good !

I've just finished "Blood Music"....
One of the best books I've read this year I think - chilling stuff, heavy on the science (as with many Bear books) but a gripping read that has had me sat in my room all afternoon to finish it off.
A fantastic novel, check it out on Amazon here; http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec....6956602

Started Fatherland by Robert Harris this morning...
From Amazon; "Set in 1964, with Hitler having won the war and ruling over a Greater German Reich, a German policeman investigates a supposedly routine death and ends up uncovering a secret that some people will go to any length to protect."
Good stuff so far.

Quote (dafrca @ 10 2005 June,15:11) | Quote (Legion 4 @ 09 2005 June,21:44) | Just finished the H/H story, not bad. ?Starting another in the book tomorrow, from another author. I let you know more, but I'm still a Drake fan ! ? |
I agree, if I had to select one or the other, Drake's stories are far and away better in my opinion.
dafrca | Thats because you two are Grunt-centric: Lady Harrington is an Officer in the Senior Service!
Seriously, I really enjoy he naval stuff in HH (funnily enough) and the use of many naval customs and traditions from many navies throughout history.
Of course I like Drake too!
Just finished HH #8 and starting #9!
