Hello to any computer literate people out there, I know there's quite a few Any bright ideas as to how to get rid of 'something' that insists it wants to dial up for you, I've tried Spybot, any others?

Spybot search & destroy? And it doesn't detect it? Sounds quite strange, as far as I know that program is by far the best spyware-malware-dialer killer there's out there.
Maybe you're using some old non-updated version? Did you download it from the official site? There are lots of unathorized copies put forth by unscrupolous guys who copy the software and rebrand it.... the official site is:

Get Ad-Aware Personal. It and Spybot S&D find most stuff.

Good luck Justiniel - I followed Magnus' advice and downloaded Spybot, and it found 94 nasties on mine! Thanks Magnus!

Hi!
I use Spybot too, very efficient.
You need to update it yourself through the program, so update, immunize and "search and destroy", then check if you get the same problem.

What version of windows you using? Anyhow, there are programs out there that will allow you complete control over what loads and doesnt load at startup. Spybot S&D is good, latest version is the best. I have a small program called Startup Cop that I use that will allow you to see exactly what is resident at startup, and will allow you to disable them. You could try it.

ps. what program is attempting connection, do you know?

I am no computer expert, but I recently read an article about the Spy/Adware removers. In there it was recommended to install at least two different programs of said type as no single program removed all of the nasties alone.

Thanks guys, I knew I could rely on you I'm on windows 98 at the mo, and it's the systems own dial up connection that keeps popping up, at least it's not dialing up of its own violition yet. Yup, certainly the latest Spybot (and it did clear a load of nasties, just not this one) Startup Cop sounds good, will check that one out and let you know how I get on. It is possible that the latest version of Messenger that my daughter downloaded (she said it 'forced' her too, I hate that, and it makes me suspicious) is responsible, does anyone know? Cheers, and thanks again.

I'm no computer expert but I if you're on a dial up modem I have a theory: When the computer starts up Messenger allways attempts to log on. If you are using a dial up modem I think it is possible that messenger wants you to connect to the web and this opens the dial up box... Try disabeling automatinc startup of Messenger in preferences and see if the problem still occurs when Messenger isn't running.
Cheers!

WMN may be correct. IM does do that if you have it set to automatically attempt to connect. Probably when your daughter d/l the new version, the settings were changed. Me personally, I hate IM...very dangerous and buggy piece of cr@p...but, that would be my own opinion.

Cheers WMN and Iblisdrax, I'll double check that, though I've always shut down IM as soon as it tries to open. I'd have to agree with you 'I', I REALLY hate that program and stuff like this doesn't help.

Thanks again all. Well, I've tried Startup Cop, what a bewildering amount of programs that I haven't a clue what half of them do and for some strange reason I could only get it to work once so will have to identify that also. On the plus side I need manage to find an instantaccess prog and get rid of it so hopefully that's the culprit dealt with Will load up adaware also, these things are always useful especially with a daughter that downloads everything willynilly.

mmm...something strange there.... I've never had that problem with Startup Cop. I built a second computer just so my wife and kids would not destroy mine that way...
