Hi!

I have been of the opinion that GW has always wanted to be some sort of mainstream entertainment, say like GI Joe or Barbie. The marketing tactics they display are similar since mainstream "toys" constantly replenish their customer base as the young ones "move on".

Trouble is that is the wargaming hobby pliable enough to have this marketing tactic work indefinitely? If you canstantly "pump and dump" can the lack of long term gamers (i.e veterans) be over looked?

I suspect the answer is no and at some time GW will realize this and readjust its tactics. The real question will be if anyone will care enough about the company anymore to care....

Time will tell if all this is just another bump in the long ascent up the corporate food chain or the beginning of painful times ahead.

Does anyone know of a website that you can order Epic minis and receive a discount?  I e-mailed doordice.com and they replied stating they could BFG minis with a 20% discount but no mention of Epic.

Thanks,
ADrian

Hi!

I doubt it ruiza. The separate distribution chain caps the discount to the retailer at 20%, so that would mean to sell epic at cost with no profit for him.

Bummmer....

Saw this posted on the SG forum as well. It looks as though we will see (yet another) price jump with GW products. ...I think that settles it: I'll buy my last batch of GW stuff before April...

Cheers!

Wow, GW raising their prices. And this is a shock how?

Hi!

Given that fanatic games and epic with the so called re-organization will mean next to no epic for the future, I can safely say the price hike is meaningless to me..... :;):

Well in the past 2 years I have bought a few novels, the EA Rulebook and Fanatic Mag.  Thats it from GW, the rest has been trades with you good folks and Ebay.

My planned modest expansions will get actioned within the next month and from then on it really will be a case of "new and must have" for Epic.

Realistically, I have more than enough for all my IG/SM/Ork/Chaos(well soon!) armies.  Nids are about half done and will be an 'army in waiting" until the EA Nid situation resolves itself.  My BFG Imp/SM/Chaos fleets are large enough for most fleet actions, and I have all the SpaceHulk and Blood Bowlstuff I need

I love Epic but love the diversty of wargaming in all periods and styles too much to sacrifice it to stay with a single company or game.  Like V I have some Aeronefs on the way, am also painting 15mm Medieval armies and some Silent Death fighters, have a massive box of 28mm WW2 which hasnt been touched and a great collection of classic boardgames and rules.  Add that to minimal time at home and the answer is obvious, but still isnt nice...

And yes dafrca - why ARE we all so suprised at this?  Orwellian "doublethink" at its best...

Hi!

It sort of like some horror movies....

...you now the monster will pop up just around the next corner...

..but scream anyway when it surprises the victim...

...GW price hikes are just like that.... :;):

Good analogy Primarch - and no matter how bad the movie was, you usually end up watching the sequel at one point or another! :)

Hi!

Regarding e-bay, just wait another 6 months to one year, after its clear Epic A has died due to lack of support and I suspect epic bids will drop again. That was the trend after epic 40k's demise.

Be patient, good ebay deals will eventually come back.

Maybe not, epic40k didn't have a constantly developing source of free official rules and amendments like EA does. Because its fan based, GW doesn't have to invest many resources beyond into it, just two staff and release a book and e-zine every so often.

If they have cut back on their grandiose release schedule I think it is only being realistic -better to have the old nids and chaos back early, instead of  releasing all new nid and chaos ranges in 5 years time, and wierd stuff like siegemasters now.

But then if they has released at least basic lists for Eldar, Nids & Chaos (even if without any new units or figures) right at the very start then maybe Epic A would have been more successful from the very start.

Did n't have to be fully extensive lists, without any pretty pictures etc, but they should have had very basic lists for these 3 races in the same way you had Ravening Hordes supplement for WFB when it was re-released.

That means that people with exisiting armies start playing the game from day one, promoting interest in the game, and thus when the full lists such as Swordwind are released there is already a bigger pool of active Epic players that can be persuaded to go out and buy a new army.

Now they have release Swordwind they need to get basic lists out for Chaos and Nids ASAP before those players lose interest and drift away to other games.

Cheers

James

Hi!

I agree. I thought it very bad for Epic A to have concentrated on armageddon armies without issueing starting list for ALL armies. Had this been done the palty support would have been less deadly.

As it is, those who were shafted with Epic 40k, like chaos and tyranid players got the "double shaft" now.

I doubt that the E:A fan base will maintain interest beyond whatever release of miniatures Fanatic had made ready before the "re-organization", becuase I dont think the game was supported long enough to obtain a "critical mass" of enough new players to see it through the years it will take all armies to be supported.

This is what killed epic 40k (amongst other things), the line, when pulled was not complete. As it stands Epic A is NOT a complete game. Too many missing armies without official rules (beta rules and rules in progess are not enough in my view). Even if fanatic strives to complete it (which IMO they wont be able to do since its obvious GW is not backing them with resources) it will take years.

For the hardcore fan like us that may not be a problem, since we often play lots of different armies, but I doubt it will spark interest to wait so long.

Hardcore fans will not let epic die....

..but without new blood epic will NOT grow either....

..so it seems stagnation will be epic's lot for now.

This presumes that the game wasn't successful (from all accounts it sold a lot of figs even at the staggering price they were asking) or that the current state of Fanatic had anything to do with the money the games were bringing in.

I think that GW made its decision based simply on the fact that even a succesful Fanatic Studio makes a drop in the barrel compared to their 40K and WFB lines.

It isn't worth their time to continue to make games in that line. Even if it does make cash (and it does) ,

There was an interesting quote from Portent (so, judge its validity for yourself), that Fanatic was actually bringing in less profit than GW make from spray paints!
