Hi Doc, I add water in many cases - and I am a fan of flesh wash. I usually don't apply it scientifically, but transport a lightly loaded brush of the flesh wash into a small plastic container, then liberally soak the brush in water and add it to the flesh wash in the container - this usually retains the wash effect well, but spreads it more thinly, permitting the original colour to retain its shade. On some colours I use two 'brushloads' of water - e.g. on white or flesh - this thins it further and stains the base colour far less. If too concentrated a mixture is applied, a brush damp with water passed over the 'washed' area thins it down effectively - but beware of dripping! Cheers and good luck.

Good luck then - if you keep the water handy you can correct wash overloading easily, as I described earlier on, so it shouldn't cause problens.

My washes are more water than ink, I think im using at least a 60/40 water/ink mix....less screw ups on my part that way and easily corrected.
my 2cents,

I always use diluted paint for my washes, not ink. ?This can be much cheaper, and looks good. ?You can easily control the intensity of the wash by adding more or less dilutent (is that a word ? ). ?I used to use water based paint for my wash, because of its ease of cleanup, but I've switched to (diluted) artists' oils. ?I found the water based washes to look great when wet, but sometimes blotchy when dry. ?The oil based ones look better that way. ?Furthermore, you have lots of working time with the oils (less forgiving with mistakes). ?Because it takes a long time to dry, it can be good for painting lots of minis, as you can do an "assembly line". ?However, if you are in a hurry to finish, it might not be the best choice, as you would probably need a day for it to dry before going to the next step.
As a final note, one of the artists' oils wash best feature is the ability to play with it as its almost dry. ?For example, you can "streak" the almost dry paint with a dry brush to subtly pull the color from one area to another.
Good luck, looking forward to seeing the army, CF

Thanks everyone for your tips. Didnt get round to doing the washes last night as i never got the camo scheme finished on the chimeras.
Jimbo - i was wondering how to take the shine off my test model, cheers.
CF - thanks for the advice, although a bit too advanced for me (plus i dont have any oil paints), its always good to hear as many different approaches as possible. BTW i really do like your Eldar Titans.
I will have a go at both a diluted ink wash with a spot of paint, and diluted paint as a wash. hopefully i will post a pic of each to show if there was any difference. Although dont hold your breath waiting for pics, i am pretty lazy
