Yeah, well, if the GW space marine dreadnoughts weren't 40-freakin-dollars for a plastic kit, I probably would have started already. I've got most of a spare wraithlord just sitting in a box.
I seriously think their marketing people are attempting to find exactly how far the elasticity of demand stretches.
Personally, I haven't bought anything directly from them in years and I would have thought that many other people would have done the same - even moreso after their "no internet discounters" policy.

I only have a couple of 40k armies (mostly unpainted) because a local dealer stopped supporting GW a couple of years ago and sold everything off at 50% discount.
