By Monday -- thanks to a trade -- I'm gonna have the following NIB Ork ships ready to serve as the foundation for a new Greenskin fleet.
Here's the first batch:
Gorbag's Revenge BB Kill Kroozer Kill Kroozer Three each of Onslaught, Savage and Ravager escorts
The first game with them comes that weekend. Based off some advice from an Ork player, I was think of this approach.
Gorbag's (with a warboss & 1 re-roll), looted torpedoes and boosted to carry torpedo bommerz. Kill Kroozer Kill Kroozer (warboss, 1 re-roll), boosted shields My 9 initial escorts Putting me a bit above 1,200 points
The logic from the Ork player was that an Ork fleet doesn't have to just ram ram ram. It can spit out a ton of ordinance if used properly, and thus weaken the opposition when it comes time to use the heavy gunz and think about slamming hulls together.
Gorbag's Revenge can launch up to 8 squadrons of torpedo bombers, and each of those would produce a strength 2 salvo (Depending on the size of my attack craft waves that could mean anything up to a single S16 salvo). The BB launches a fair number of full-blown torps, too, especially when helped along by the "looted torpedoes" addition. So one ship could spew a frightening number of warheads.
The longtime Ork player was calling to have the Kill Kroozers converted into torpedo platforms, but I'm thinking maybe not for the first game, especially as I have escorts that can launch a fair number by themselves.
2 weeks from now (it takes the local shop that long to fulfill orders), I'm going to be able to add a Terror Ship and two blister packs of brute ramships. And I have some arts and crafts supplies (read 3" styrofoam balls, an exacto knife and a handful of Chaos and Imperial weapon sprues) -- so I was thinking of trying to build a couple of Roks just for fun.
What do folks think
Matt

The Ork fleet has the capacity to spit out a horrendous ammount of firepower and torpedoes, but only once. Even though you will most likely manage to reload many of your ships after the first salvo, you wont get them all, and so your firing will become unco-ordinated quickly. So, save it and fire at the last minute as you close with the enemy, you will find that you are able to rip through them easily that way.
Personally, I find ramming to be a bit of a waste of time, even with an ork fleet. The chance of even your Brutes managing to hurt anything Cruiser sized or larger is not worth the almost complete destruction of the Escort. The best use of Brutes is simply for fear value, the enemy vessels will be scared of them and so if you keep them on the wings of your attack line, you will be able to herd the enemy fleet closer together in the moddle in an attempt to avoid you.
The standard weapons batteries are really the Orks friend. You could also have a look here:

And there is an article on building planets (that you could use as a base for some roks), here:

Good luck.

So Matt- how did you get on with your Ork Fleet?
Anyone else play Orks in BFG? What advice would you give on Fleet Composition?
Cheers
James
