Hi. Ships need to move a minimum of half their rate, and up to their full movement each turn, unless you use special orders to do something different.
Your fleets sound fine, except that I would avoid having two Slaughters in a Chaos fleet with four ships. I would stick to Murder and Carnage vessels in a small fleet, as they are the most tactically flexible.

Is the carnage any real use (its just that 6 shots, 4 at long range, dont sound terribly scary compared to 8 shots from a murder unless you are on a very large board)?
How big a board do people normally play BFG on, anyway?

I play on a 6' by 4' board, which is perfect for games up to about 3000 pts- you could get by with a 4x4' easily I'd think...

Quote (stormseer @ 27 2004 Sep.,16:58) | I play on a 6' by 4' board, which is perfect for games up to about 3000 pts- (...) | Out of curiosity, as I've never tryed nothing anywhere close to that in BfG, just how long does it take for you to play such a game (3000pts) stormseer?
By the way, how many points are used in "official" GW BfG tournments?
Cheers Axt

Dont get confused. With lances, the strength is exactly the number of dice that you need to roll, each one hitting on a 4+. With weapon batteries, you cross reference the strength against which direction the enemy is facing. So, a strength 6 weapon battery may roll five dice against a vessel heading towards it, or 3 dice is the enemy is moving across the arc. Then, the dice need to roll higher than the targets armour.
So, four lances can be much more effective than a strength eight weapon battery, depending on the situation.

Ax- Somewhere in the region of 3 1/2hrs, maybe 4, for that size game- the biggest I've played was about 5000 aside though-about 5hrs in total.. much fun!

Another quick question (about carriers this time)
Which of the two imperial carrier cruisers, Mars or Dictator, is most effective?

Neither is 'the best'... The Mars works better at longer ranges, with it's Nova Cannon, and longer range lances and batteries, and the Dictator can be used to support closer engagements, protecting escorts from assault boats, capital ships from bombers, or offensivly by lauching bomber strikes to finish off ships.
Try the different classes out when you get the game, and see what you think.

Ok, here are two fleets (with point values this time).
Imperial fleet:
Fleet Admiral 50pts
Mars class BC ?Sword of Truth? 270pts
2x Lunar class cruisers ?Emperors Justice? and ?Emperors light? 360 pts
Gothic class cruiser ?Cleansing Flame? 180 pts
TOTAL: 860 pts
Chaos fleet:
Warmaster 50pts
Hades class BC ?Eternal Torment? 200pts
Carnage class cruiser ?Sadistic? 180pts
Carnage class cruiser ?Sinful? 180pts
Devastation class cruiser ?Abhorrent? with CSM crew 225pts
TOTAL 785pts
Feel free to tear apart!
One question...how can I get the chaos fleet points the same as the imp fleet points?

You can add escorts, higher ranked admirals, re-rolls, marks of chaos, different ships.... many things really...

For now, i'm not going to make any more fleet lists, as my tactics etc are changing so often ? ?but I do have (even more) questions!
First off: ?I hear imperial ships can be given nova cannon upgrades, how many points are they, and which ships can take them?
Secondly: if i had an imperial cruiser either side of a chaos cruiser like so: ?
[Imperial]
[Chaos]
[Imperial]
Which imperial cruiser (Lunar or gothic) could probably do the most damage, considering that each can only get off a single broadside?
I'm leaning towards the gothic, but don't really know!

In the Imperial fleet, the Mars comes with the NC as standard, as does the Domintor iirc, and you can upgrade a Lunar to have one too. The Armageddon and Victory battleships also have them as standard bow armament. I'll look up points for the upgrade when I get home if no-one has posted it by then... Don't go overboard with lots of them in small fleets though- sure, they are an effective weapon, but too many can p*ss your opponets off and doesn't really fit with their background (ie; rare & powerful)....

Don't worry about me going overboard, I just want one to deal with very fast and/or dangerous stuff that I dont want to get close to.
What I dont like about the Mars is that in a small game, with both a nova cannon and launch bays, its gonna be a real fire magnet, whereas if the nova cannon and launch bays are separate the opponent has to split fire.
Where can I find stats, points cost etc for the "Armageddon" and "Victory" types?

Oops- that should be 'Apocalypse', not Armageddon- Apoc is the battleship, Arm is the battlecruiser-
Stuff on the Apocalypse, Oberon and the Armageddon; http://www.armageddon3.com/English/Camp ... leets.html
The Victory stats have been in BFG Mag and are in the 2002 Annual (don't worry about them though- the stats/points are not playtested properly, and the Bakka fleet list isn't official yet either).
The Mars is better off as a long-range support ship- the NC has a minimum range of 30cm, so if you want to keep using it, you'll need to keep it away- the rest of the weapons are longer ranged than normal cruisers (45cm rather than 30cm), so you can sit it further back, even if you want to use them...
Also remember that no one unit is all powerful- while the Mars is a powerful ship, it won't tear into the enemy without support- likewise, if it gets crippled or taken out, it does not mean you entire battle plan is ruined....
Hope that helps...
