For scratchbuilding; plasticard and plastic stock... can be expensive, but it's ace...

You can also use cardboard, blue foam, wire, bits of old toys.. the list is endless really!

Cardboard- I really like cardboard because of the price. The stuff on the back of your average A4 notepad has a nice thickness and also a bit of texture which makes it great for drybrushing afterwards (Particularly if you are doing Imperial buildings)

Balsawood, matches and toothpicks- Balsawood, matches and toothpicks are of course also a necessity. The downside of cardboard is that in time it will warp. This can be countered by mounting the building on a base and strengthen it with strips of balsawood as part of the structure's decoration.

Polystyrene- For Ork buildings I use polystyrene a lot. Just the rough ball packing stuff, add some balsawood and cover with textured paint.

Textured paint- My take on textured paint is to use a mix of 25% PVA, 25% white or black acrylic paint and 50% water. Then mix with the finest sand or dirt you can get your hands on. The GW stuff is too rough IMO for covering Epic buildings.

- Old Computers, TVs, or Radios. (tear apart for bits inside)

- Old Electronic devices. (same)

- Packing Materials.

- Baby Food containers (new ones, not the old bottles).

- Used Up bottle and containers (food or other household items.)

- Cleaned up car parts.

- ... Just about anything you want. ?:laugh:

I have also discovered that if you go down to the local coffee bar, they now do some wooden stir sticks that are ideal. They look like thin, long lolly (popsicle - sp?) sticks. I steal a load whenever the GF wants a coffee.

I use just about anything....course this gets me evil looks from the significant other since I have piles of stuff that I 'plan' on using in a project someday....including a complete computer!  And I get evil looks for stealing the sucker sticks she uses for her chocolates.  :cool:

I still want to try the crushed sea shells idea.

There is a local place that has shells to be used as ground cover (like the wood chips and rocks). I was going to drop by and see what the smalles bag I could get was and how much it would cost.

Tas: What IS Flexstone?  I've never heard of it...


Fleckstone is a spraypaint product that spits out bits of rubble mixed with paint. It gives a faux stony texture to the item being sprayed.

I saw one bottle that was fake rust. I thought it looked cool too.

WARMASER NICE's ULTRA-COOL METHOD FOR ORKY METAL PLATES:

They're made from this metal foil which comes with my contact lenses. It's somewhat thicker than tin foil but still fairly easy to manipulate. I don't know if there's anything equivalent easily available. Simply cut out the pieces you want and press the rivets in with a pointed object. Then attach the piece to the model.
