I just finished carving some hills out of foam.
I never realized that making hills was so much work!

I prefer making hills from paper mache or plaster , making them all at once, then painting them over time. I hate carving rounded shapes out of foam.

I finished painting the hills and everything is ready for CONQUEST except a few army lists that I want to tweak with a little.

I found hill building from foam not too difficult, or that time consuming... just extremely messy! To make mine I've been carving chunks of blue foam into the rough shapes, then sanding them into natural curves- a dust mask is required if you don't want to be sneezing all day! Guess I should invest in a hot wire cutter, but alas, current finances do not allow it...

My hot wire cutter works pretty good on small to medium sized pieces, just not with really large bits of styrofoam. I'd like to have a hot knife, but they are like $70.
btw, how expensive are hot wire cutters over there? I only paid $8 for mine here in the USA.

The knife is the most useful. ?The wire on the stick. ?It allows you to cut through large pieces of foam. I made this with the tools.

The 'hot wire' cutting system is the best for foam in my experience. Use of sandpaper to refine the more gentle edges makes it more rigid. I then paint it, cover with clear estapol and add flock while its still wet. Once fully dry (2 days later) I then add another layer of estpol. The end result is VERY tough, waterproof, light and durable. I have spilled coffe, beer and other stuff on them and they are back in play in seconds after a quick drain with no damage.
For a cheap hot wire wcutter, use your car jumper leads, the car battery and some thin wire. Works a treat!
