Cheers, guys.

I have now made a start on the second company.

I'd been hoping to get this formation, an Assault detachment and a Devastator detachment all painted up by the E-UK GT. Since I can't make it to that after all, it doesn't really matter any more, but that's still my rough target anyway, followed by another Tactical detachment to finish off the company.

I think Moot Green, from the current range, is a pretty good match. Khemri Brown is the one I'm worried that I'm running out of. I use it on bases and while Baneblade Brown is close enough in colour to be fine, it doesn't cover nearly so well.

Ah, well.

Second Company, squads Seven and Eight, reporting for duty!

Devastators next.

A few things.

First, I wasn't completely happy with the Assault detachment, so I tidied up the highlights here and there and added white rims to the exhausts of the jump packs. I've updated the photo in the previous post, although it's quite hard to see the exhausts from the front.

Second, I've gone back and updated the Terminator detachment slightly. Having decided to adopt the Codex convention of marking Sergeants with red helmets (if they're wearing helmets at all), I decided to apply this to the Terminators as well. Terminator Sergeants now have red helmets with a white stripe.

And finally, I have painted up a detachment of Devastators.

I'm vaguely concerned that it may be hard to spot the extra heavy weapons at a glance. The lascannon is fairly conspicuous, but the heavy bolter may not be visible without examining the model closely. So I'm vaguely considering doing something to try and make the Devastator units more immediately distinguishable from Tacticals. One possibility would be to give them white bolter casings instead of metal, but I'm not completely convinced.

Assuming I don't go back and change this formation, I have one more Tactical detachment to go before this company is finished.

Great looking marines Axel. Very nicely done.
Traditionally some marines have a chevron on the shoulder for the dev's.

Go on, you know you want to :D

Well, I have so far chickened out of doing any shoulder pad markings, and the 28mm version of this chapter didn't have tactical markings on the shoulder pads. They had company and squad numbers on the kneepads, and both shoulder pads had the chapter symbol. That said, 16-year-old me wasn't always right and I've deviated from the heraldry he came up with in a couple of places already (sergeants' helmets, scouts' shoulder pads).

If I did add chevrons to the devastators then I would also have to add arrows to the tactical and crosses to the assault marines. And I'm not sure that adding tactical markings would help make them identifiable at a glance; it would still require you to look carefully at the models to spot the difference.

But if I could do a decent job of painting shoulder markings, it would look good. Hmm...

Thanks, chaps!

Well, while I was pondering whether to paint symbols on my Marines' shoulder pads, I got distracted and painted up this landing craft instead:

I think this might be the most difficult model I've ever assembled, in terms of the amount of filing, pinning and filling in gaps to get it to all fit together cleanly. The end result is worth it, though, I think.

Right, back to that Tactical detachment.

I have definitely heard that that is a tough model!

Thank you.

Well, that's another tactical formation painted, bringing the Second Company to completion:

With that done, before I move onto the Third Company, I can now take a break from infantry and do some more tanks. Starting with these Vindicators:

These are the only Rhino-hulled vehicles I have that aren't based on plastic Rhinos. They are, however, still converted using 3D-printed parts, as I've added dozer blades from Shapeways.

Honestly, I'm just worried that if I let myself slow down with these guys I'll lose the momentum I've got going and just grind to a halt. And since I'm not even half way to my end goal with this army, I'd rather that didn't happen just yet!

More progress. These bunkers are from Wasteland Studios. They're mostly just to use as objective markers, but they might also be useful if I decide to try out the Imperial Fists army list.

Probably Land Raiders next.
