We've had two late entrants so add another Codex Marines list to the pile, and some Orks!

we're up to 22 players now, I'll be setting up tables this evening

as with last year make sure you go around to the entrance (white UPV door) on Fosse road (opposite the car park) as the entrance on livingstone street will be locked, the bar opens around 11am IIRC

I threw away one golden opportunity back at BHGS Challenge, I'm sure it will happen again, plus I'll be running the event so I'm sure my mind will be on eleventy billion other things instead of playing

you should probably clear a spot on the mantlepiece now ;)

Oh well, I managed the same in Birmingham and that meant my team finished runners up as well! I fancy your chances with that dark angels list. Very tasty.

Thanks to all who attended, Steve and Dave for helping ref, collecting scores and being their awesome selves, and Leicester phat cats club for letting us use their tables and boards, special mention to Cranium27, Tiny-Tim and Consul Avenging Angel for providing the excellent additional scenery. Also Kudos to the Newcastle crew for spending 7 hours on the megabus to attend a tournament so far away! I hope you all felt it was worthwhile and we'll see you at future events!

for my part I had 3 very fun games

Game 1 - Flyingthruwater

this game was against steel legion, limited air cover meant I had relative freedom of the skies but then a crit from a hydra turned my thunderhawk, replete with terminators, into a crater.... costing me my main offensive unit.... I realised that I'd probably given a win away and tried to play for the draw, but didn't quite manage to destroy enough to win on points

Game 2 - Cranium27

I'm used to facing marines with few units on the ground but Cranium27 had a veritable horde, with land raiders, whirlwinds and lots of others, this time I was able to keep my terminators alive for 3 turns, and while my BTS rapidly bought the farm, I managed to pull off a 2-1 win thanks to my devastators podding in, then winning a tense air assault against a thunderhawk with my landing craft

Game 3 - Consul Avenging Angel

Consul was using krieg which are even more of a beanbag army than steel legion, while my orbital strike knocked out some AA guns and deathstrikes, then my devs critted his shadowsword, I just didn't have the power to kill his huge companies, this became a cagey affair and went to 4 turns, but then as usual my lack of supreme commander let me down when my thunderhawk failed to activate to contest my blitz, turning a probable flat draw into a 2-0 loss

Will post up full results tomorrow when I get them off the other laptop, hopefully people will be along to share pics!

Thanks to Simon for putting on another great event. Thanks to my 3 opponents for 3 fun if difficult games. Special thanks to Mike for going out his way to pick me up and drop me off. Hope to make it to the gt but will have to try and get a 2 day pass off of the wife.

See you all again soon ( i might even use a different army next time)

Thanks to Simon for organising, Dave for reffing/sitting out, my opponents, and to Richard and Ginger for the lifts.

I took 3k dark angels, so did Kyuss, so did Steve. All three lists had identical formation selections, with some differences in upgrade options:
Double devs, double thawk, double scout, double nephilim, space ship, lander, predAs, deathwing.

Game 1, Biel-tan
My first player was pretty new to the game, and im pretty new to Eldar! The list had a warlock, night spinners, void spinner, fire prisms, wave serpent guardians, and falcon+fire storm formations. Lots off AA, not good. Dropped my devs at the start, barrage got a couple of hits to break some falcon/fireprisms and the devs then unloaded 8*3+ sustain shots on guardians mounted in wave serpents for … zero kills. The wave serpents continued to make save after save for the rest of the game. Lots of AA on the table but I’d managed to chip most of it away by the end of turn 2 (except for the warlock, which was never in a good spot to crossfire). With the AA clear I went and threw my terminators into a silly assault and lost them. The only thing that saved me was the warlock not getting stuck in, I was pretty well spread out so there weren't options for rolling assaults. This ended in a turn 3 draw, 1–0 to me – annoyingly this could easily have been 2–0 to me if id moved in a different direction in the last activation of the game!

Game 2, Tau
My second time playing tau, I’d had a similar matchup against Richard’s tau with my dark angels at 4k at oxford. The list was crisis suit BTS, two firewarrior cadre in fish, thee markerlight scout vehicle groups, oodles of hammerheads with a couple of skyrays, spaceship, barracudas.
What really shaped this was the Tau failing a lot of activation and rally roles. Tau deployed behind heavy scout screens. With plenty of targets on table I dropped my devs at the start again, barrage missed anything good and clipped a couple of recons for i think 1 kill. Devs ZoC-bounced off to a flank in their pods and popped a skyray. With the AA lessened on the left I went all in, dropping the predators from the landing craft, recycling terminators, and rushing scouts in to keep broken units within 30cm while I ignored the other table half. A lot of tau went on overwatch at various stages, which always makes me jittery. End of turn 2 swung it – popped the last skyray just before the BTS crisis went off overwatch, so promptly wiped the BTS in a terminator air assault. More failed activations and rallies for the tau with my aircraft picking off and air assaulting TSNP candidates left this 4–0 to me turn 3.

Game 3, Dark Angels
The decisive result in game 2 saw me on table 1 for the final round, facing Steve with Dark Angels. I've been to three tournaments this year and in each ive ended up playing against drop marines final game and losing :P
This was a really odd/interesting game as we both had the same aggressive lists with little deployed on table. While the lists were similar, a big difference was that my BTS devs start on table, where Steve’s terminator BTS does not. Steve won the spaceship roll off to go on turn 3, leaving me with turn 1 and not many targets about – I managed to polish off one scout formation in the end, mostly due to a lucky thawk. Steve’s second scout formation had a lucky escape turn 2 when mine failed to activate. We spent the first two turns cogitating and putting nephilims on cap. At many points we both had two nephilim formations on cap. Something had to break and it was me – turn 3 Steve’s pod devs landed in range of my BTS and cut it down to two rhinos, which were finished off later by the preds which landed to contest my control of Steve’s blitz. As Steve pointed out after, I should have moved the rhinos out of shooting range of the blitz. Terminators then landed on my blitz, which combined with scouts on another objective gave steve 3–0 turn 3.

Agreed, Well done Simon for the smooth running of the event, a special thanks to Dave for sitting out the event and refereeing, and to the many newcomers for joining in.

As usual I took another Eldar variant, though this one was intended to be a little more competitive than usual.

Biel Tann
400 Aspects - 3x Striking Scorpions, 3x Dire avengers, 2x Fire Dragons (Autarch and Exarch)
300 Guardians + Wraith Guard
300 Guardians + Wraith Guard
250 Storm Serpent
250 Storm Serpent
250 Scorpion
250 Fire Prisms
250 Falcons including 2x Fire-Storms
200 Jetbikes including 1x Vyper
150 Guardians
100 Rangers (4)
100 Rangers (4)
50 Wraithgate

Game #1 - Dave, Tau
One of several who had braved the journey from the Geordie hinterlands. Dave had many Tetras garrisoned forwards in terrain, backed up by lots of railheads and fusion heads, and the SC formation of Crisis suits. I was fortunate to catch three formations with the space bombardment after which Dave failed 3-4 attempts to put the skimmers on OW, weakening the Tau sufficiently to allow the Eldar to move their storm serpents into range and eventually destroy the annoying Tetras. This in turn allowed the Aspects and Guardians to assault their way forwards to capture the T&H objectives while other support formations controlled the spread Tau T&H objectives. At the end of the very enjoyable game, a single Tau Tetra rallied in the Eldar table-half, so 2-1 to the Eldar.

Game #2 - Kieran, IG
Another brave northern traveller, Kieran placed the IG T&H objectives centrally opposite the Eldar T&H objectives, one of which was turned into a 'gate. A tense war of attrition followed with the IG throwing forwards screening the IG BTS to thwart Eldar attacks. Turn #2 saw the Guardians positioned in a wood among the various T&H objectives and surrounded by three IG formations. The Aspects assaulted a Hydra battery intermingled with a mechanised infantry company, which then countercharged a chimera into the Guardians bringing them into the assault. after the massive dice roll off, the mech commissar escaped but the Aspects were in tatters. At that point we ran out of time and had to stop an extremely tense but enjoyable game. 1-1

Game #3 - Horatio, IG
We have played a number of games over the years, which are always enjoyable. All T&H objectives were again placed centrally and one turned into a 'gate. This time Horatio had Deathstrikes, the perfect antidote to my Storm Serpents, and one duly evaporated in the first turn. This problem was compounded by my failing to get the spacecraft to activate in turn #1 leaving the IG unscathed. After some tense sparring in the first turn, Horatio finally advanced his armoured company into a position where I was able to mount an assault destroying all but two units, leaving the remaining SS in the centre of the table with Falcons and Guardians. In turn two the SS was able to reach the IG baseline allowing the Aspects to assault and destroy the remnants of the IG BTS, setting up another assaults by the Guardians - which failed. The IG then concentrated on destroying the Aspects which they finally achieved in turn #3, but the damage had been done as they had no units in the Eldar table-half while the Eldar controlled their own objectives.
A really hard-fought and enjoyable game as usual that could have gone either way, but finally ended 3-1 to me.

As a consequence of unusually 'ordinary' dice, I ended up in a mind-boggling 5th place - so my thanks again to everyone for a really memorable event.

Thanks to everyone for making us northerners feel welcome and thanks to Simon for running the event. We all had a blast and agreed that it was well worth the journey. You can take it as a given that we'll be back next year. I apologize for some of our models not being finished, we were up 'til 4'o'clock Saturday morning trying to get them finished but after the bus-ride we needed at least a couple of hours before the tournament. We'll have them done for the next one I promise :)

Thanks again guys, you'll definitely be seeing us again as soon as possible.

Great to re-visit Leicester.
Ok that’s surely an expression used for the first time. But it was nice to meet up with the guys from a year ago, and better still to see that many have learnt the importance of consuming alcohol whilst playing.
Thanks also to Simon for all the organising and the wise people for updating and correcting my rules knowledge.
I wasn't sure what to expect bringing my necron army. This of course was my first mistake, my poor thousands sons make for a far better tournament army. That and longer games. My poor opponents had to sit and chat with me with in excess of an hour after our games finished before most people set up; for this I apologies profusely.
I shall work on my lists, as my chat is moribund.
So game one saw me facing Kev and his titans. Great…
A really nice guy, but neither of us could really inject any excitement into titans vs robots. I know it’s crazy, but for some reason epic seems a game where giant robots fighting each other just isn’t great, certainly not as a comparative to alien hordes fighting demon worshipping super humans. I did however begin to notice two things that would be the theme for the day: I hadn’t brought enough monoliths (Yeah, Richard noticed this in the first four seconds of seeing my list.) and my dice had become Gus’ed. So I battled through, able to remove Kev’s Warhounds, and thus securing a rather dry draw. Fortunately my opponent brought some good chat and a dry sense of humour which saved it from being a truly dull game. Unfortunately that was to follow.
Game 2. Mike. I really wanted to play Mike, especially after I watched his Nids savage Steve Cole in Birmingham. Indeed I’ve always had an appreciation for anyone who savages Steve. The only issue here though was it was a Necron v Necron game. Now my poor robots had played 10 games coming into this tournament, against many and varied armies and opponents, but I never thought to learn to play titans and Necrons with them. Indeed who would choose to do so when you could be far happier listening to white noise and staring at an empty wall? Worse still was that I was hoping to learn from playing Mike, though all I actually learnt was that rolling ones and twos doesn’t not help.
The game was over in turn one as my monoliths died in every assault and I began to realise that I shouldn’t have made the dice out of the tomb stones I’d pillaged from my neighbouring Indian burial mound.
This gave me a turn three game, pretty much to decide how long the travel back to sunless Scotland would be. Fortunately here I drew marines. Poor Gareth, whose army was fabulously well painted, had never ran into the horror of Necrons, and I found myself feeling like Richard must have when he faced me at game three at the same tournament last year. Some unfortunately inter mingling at the set up, gave me a good opportunity, but not before a tactical company had again brought out some woeful saves and killed two monoliths. My luck however rallied slightly and I was able to prep and assault the other Tac, whirlwinds and Reaver, breaking them. Thereafter it was a rather ugly necron assault fest. This however saw that game ended at the first activation of turn two.
I had done nothing in turn one of the first game, been destroyed in turn one of the second, and won on turn one of the third. So I had played a whopping five turns in three games, and worse, id go on to watch Scotland draw with Lithuania. Not exactly Christmas in Disney land on the excitement stakes.
Still, thanks to some great opponents, I did have a good laugh and some great chats for the day, very little of which had to do with the actual games. I will now need to find a more interesting list, possibly even with on board activations in the first turn…

I wish to state for the record that my game with Mike in brum was a draw (a very bloody draw, but still a draw). You should be careful about listening to these deceiver loving necron players ;-)

I must say i'd avoided taking Necrons to this one for the concern that i might have a play a mirror matchup, and it's a real crapshoot when it happens - you can either basically try and kill each other's monoliths from turn 1 onwards, or risk the turn 3 drop to go straight for objectives and infantry killing. Either way not the most thrilling of games... I did feel quite sorry for mike having to do it twice in a row!

I brought Krieg, maximising the reinforced armour available.

Game 1: Mike (Necrons)
I deployed pretty tight, and braced myself for the necron assault onslaught, which thanks to Mike trying to go 1 on 1 against the Gorgon units saw things go a bit pear-shaped for him, and the only functional assault unit left was a phalanx that had failed to activate - the biggest skin of teeth moment being his bts (and supreme commander) being taken down to 1 stand. Sadly i wasn't able to capitalise on things as much as would have been ideal due to a combination of duff shooting from the shadowswords and failed activations. Fortunately for mike, he had a great rallying phase, and had an excellent rally for his BTS, which came straight back up to full strength. Activations kept plagueing me for the rest of the game, and despite having 3 shadowswords on the board i was unable to kill a single monolith. Most vexing. In the end after a disappointing assault in turn 3 (snake eyes for the combat result) i picked up a 2-1 win, which was a shame, as i'd been thinking i could take at least a 3-0 at one point!

Game 2: Kev (AMTL)
Things started pretty cagey, with Kev trying to keep out of the way of the shadowswords. I did however manage to take off the Robot unit to keep his activation count in check. Turn 2 was full of promise though, and then went absolutely pear shaped on dice. 2 full gorgon units went into a single reaver and managed a single wound. For reference that's 40 5+'s to hit, and 12 6+'s. 1 wound. Kev did make a lot of armour saves, but still... Turn 3 was a similar pit of disappointment, with more snake eyes to activate, sparing 2 intermingled warhounds from an assault from my bts, and i then gave it a try with them supporting from a shadowsword, which kev managed 3 hits on, and i failed all the armour saves. This was to be the running theme for the rest of the game, and despite my best efforts Kev managed to hold on for a winning draw. In fairness, given all the awful dice Kev has had against me over the years it's only fair to be on the receiving end of it finally i guess ;) Most depressing was a rough rider company with a full gorgon company support going into a warhound, doing a poxy 1 wound, and then losing combat. So sad.

Game 3: Ben (Orks)
There were a lot of super Zzap guns, which was rather concerning. Even more so when Ben started doubling them around the board, hitting with pretty much all of them, and doing 2-3 wounds each hit... Ben tried a pretty risky air assault turn 1 which kinda backfired and cost him his landa and bike/skorcha unit, which helped me start pulling things back, although the Gargant and super stompa mob in the middle of the board was giving me real problems, again the shadowswords doing sweet FA against the supa stompa, despite 2 rounds of shooting. After he had a rough assault against a gorgon company though I was able to rush forward and nab his blitz and another objective in turn 3 for a 2-0 win.

Finished joint 3rd with Mike on points, but he picked up more objectives so dropped to 4th - which given my dice (which seem to have forgotten how to make a 4+ reinforced save) i was pretty happy with.

Finally, a big thanks to Simon for running the event, smooth as always :)
