Hey jimmy love to expand the novans some more but finding designers good at doing infantry and organics is a real problem. Ben does great work for sure but he can get expensive especially with infantry as you have to pay for each pose.

Still i'm always open to new model suggestions so fire away.

Um maybe I should have a suggestions thread in my section?

I should really learn to do organics, it's the main thing holding me back right now. Would love to do infantry models, both in 28mm and 6mm (or is it 8mm now?) scales.

And please, do add a suggestions thread in your section!

Ogryns (Homo sapiens gigantus in High Gothic) are a common feature found in PDF, Guard units as shock assault troops, the Adeptus Arbites as special "Brute Squads", as as well as more mundane rolls such as indentured work and industrial auxiliaries in bulk resource acquisition processes (see Stygies Mk3 Strip Mine pattern for prototypical use). A stable form of Ab-Human, Ogryns are not a single subspecies but hail from numerous worlds with harsh and barren environments and often high gravities where evolutionary pressures favored brute strength over abstract thought. While often derided as simple minded creatures, smart commanders understand that Ogryns possess a atavistic cunning and knack for survival in even the most difficult of terrain and situations. Once introduced into the Imperial Cult, they develop an unshakable and almost childlike faith in the Emperor, seeing Him as watching over their every action on the battlefield. Each order they receive is viewed as having worked its way down the hierarchy from the Emperor, and is followed without question and to the best of their ability. In reference to the Alpha classification of Ogryn, Lord Militant Salaban once remarked, "Blessed is the mind too small for doubt."

Painters note:
These are hacked up old school Ogryn models that do arm and head repositions and the odd power fist/claw attachment. I'm a great fan of the original model and it is a shame it was always a monopose one. I targeted six stands which allows me to have some muscle on with use of up to 3 sets in Steel Legion and Penal Legion lists (where they really work in the Brute squad upgrade). I can also throw them onto the Heavy Mechanized Infantry list which owing to the larger transport capacity available, come in multiples of 3. I went for a nice "Vietnam in Space" vibe, especially with the ones with the open flak vests, around the choices of color.

Nice! Bases just sandy paste and a dusting of larger stuff on top, plus foliage?

;)

Yeah sandy paste slurry. Dry. Application of more at full thickness with blade and modeling tool to sculpt and cork rocks. Few various beyond wash thinned paints (VGC Desert yellow, Graveyard Earth, and Cayman Green). Dry. Throw some AP dark shade to harden (paste and pumice is just paint after all so needs a good protection). A little dry brush. Various plants and mosses to season to taste.

So was digging through boxes of stuff for some nun-tanks (in other news, nun-tanks coming soon) and rediscovered a clamshell of Firestorm Armada ground scenery bits from years ago. Even though it was a space combat game they released one box of various landing pads, building, machinery, etc. Quietly they also withdrew it and the evidently are as rare as hens teeth. Keep an eye out for them if you ever find one, grab it for it's full of useful gribblies. Here I just knocked out a couple of "machines" for the ad mech factory back on pg 1 for a hoot. The floor was a bit bare of of machines.

There's one on Ebay for $50 if you're crazy.

I hadn't thought of using these little bits for epic detailing, but having looked at the old blister I have (thanks, Firestorm Armada!) some of these are just perfect. Nice one, Jimmster!

I'm planning more than a few for use on my Planetary Empires tiles as well!

I can see how they'd go very nicely. Those domes, a few of the tower pieces, the radar dishes. Oh yeah, much yummy goodness there.

So when are we starting that campaign? :D

For millennia, Enginseers and Mechanicum adepts have leveraged spare Leman Russ hulls to effect army level conversions wherein salvaged weapons and equipment would be placed into the chassis when the dire need for additional vehicles outweighed concerns of their efficacy. One such conversion is so common that the Imperial Guard have even taken to calling them unofficially, the Leman Russ Thunderer. Not as tactically flexible as the more common Demolisher, the main role of the Thunderer is to instead engage enemy held buildings or bunkers which are directly in front of it. In addition, having no turret reduces the profile of vehicle and the reduction of weight allows for additional layers of armour plating, especially on the top of the vehicle, to be added increasing the survivalability in dense urban battlefields.

LRT 1.jpg [ 652.37 KiB | Viewed 3826 times ]

It was such a successful conversion that some Adeptus Mechanicus even claiming to have evidence for its inclusion in the canon of STC design and such that the forge world of Stygies VIII purposely constructed numerous Thunderers for use in the Crusade. No less than 500 of these vehicles were presented to the 7 Merkava regiments on Oheo as part of the final siege breaking force. Knowing that concealment was impossible in this environment, venerable dazzle optical camouflage schemes were leveraged, less to hide versus prevent quick visual range and targeting of the tanks from the vulnerable sides.

tactical note: The Stygies produced Leman Russ chassis was found to have additional benefits in the urban environment where the extra clearance of the pattern's suspension allowed the tanks extra capabilities in traversing the broken ground and debris choked streets

An ugly vehicle by any estimation, the Thunderers however proved to be instrumental in providing close quarters support for infantry advancing on prepared and dug in enemy positions. As can be seen here, members of an elite Sayeret unit advance using the vehicle as armoured cover to reach positions before initiating an assault on the southern water processing complex for the hive. The successes here are believed to of lead directly to the production of purpose built Thunderers by the Tech Magi of Stygies though it is unknown at this time if the Fabricator General of Mars has explicitly blessed this endeavour or not.

Painters Note:
More crap out of the dusty storage boxes. These are some FW Leman Russ thunderers I picked up forever ago from the boards here. Finally time to bust them out. Considering just how dodgy the quality control from FW had gotten by the end of things, I didn't really want to bring too much focus on the details of the tank itself so decided to hide the imperfections under an mixed urban / field dazzle scheme and to bring more attention to the destroyed urban bases (multiple types of brick, tile, and stone plasticard sheets, multiple sets and layers of walls front to back across the bases [not really clear in these particular shots], custom debris, etc). Quickly it became apparent that they didn't need to hide, they needed to trick the eyes away from their flaws so the garish black and green scheme was born and BAM! their backstory for why these are the way they are appeared.
