A very interesting thread - reminds me so much of classic White Dwarf pics. Well done !

Another suggestion (something that is incredibly simple and that I now use for nearly all vehicles), is to paint the block colours and then slap on some Badab Black (or updated equivalent). Just dollop it on. An amazing effect and so easy. Finally, paint back some of the original colour but leave the Black effect round the edges. Works best on metals such as Boltgun. An example here:

Yellow shields all the way. I'd bring up the blue with an extreme edge of a much lighter color as well to make it pop more. Don't need much, just a few spots picked out and your brain will "do the rest" when looking at it on the tabletop.

Thanks for all the tips folks. The yellow shields are in train. Need to then add a white drybrush highlight. Glorfindel, love the black, will have a crack at that with the vehicles!
