Hi

A infantry base can shoot 360 degrees (gold rulebook p 34). Does this also count for close combat?

The question is moot for round or 20x20 bases, but for 40x12 bases this matters, in the sense how many bases you can get into contact with the enemy.

Also regarding the fire arc, has any one considered turning their 40x12 bases on the side to pack more fire power on the same area? It will look pretty dumb and is rather gamey, but non the less, if not the 40x12 halfs the firepower over the same frontage area compared to 20x20 bases.

Cheers
Jens

A: yes

B: yes, this is described in the section about Close Combat

C: What? Er, if you turn such a base "on it's side" then the 'figures' will be laying down on their backs (or fronts) and neither of those is useful for gaming. There is no way to "condense the firepower" of an Infantry stand into a smaller arc. It cannot be done and does not need to be done, as all troopers on the stand can already fire in any direction that they choose, and all ranges are measured from the center of the base - regardless of the shape of the base. If you mean something else, please explain again in a different way.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the abllity to take a rectangular base and orientate it the other way so that the short end is making base 2 base contact with the target thus theoretically allowing more bases to make contact.

Ah, that would somewhat make sense, except that the original question still makes no sense since he asked about fire arcs and not close combat. Fire arcs are not relevant to which direction close combat happens.

Still, assuming that is what was asked, I would personally consider it cheating. It is also a reason that I strongly dislike (and do not use) the 40X12 bases, as these issues come up.

No, he did ask about close combat and arcs as related to however it works for shooting. However very oddly phrased it's a cogent question.

I'm with you completely that someone using their base shape to somehow gain more CC is beardy. I prefer house rules about limiting and allowed numbers of units in CC based on target and gentlemanly/womanly behavior. You're absolutely correct that symmetric bases just stops much of that silliness. :)

Hi again,

sorry for the late getting back to this :)

Magister: There is no turning miniatures on their heads, backs or sides :) I can see the text is written unclearly. I changed my own understandning as i wrote the question and did not revise the text accordingly.

As i have read your answers I see that the rules are indeed as I read them and they open for some rather beardy moves.

I have already discussed adding CC "zones" with my gaming buddies based on the class of the attacked unit. This is simply due to we have both, round, square and rectangular bases for all unit classes. I will consider a system for shooting and moving as well so base dimensions matters less.

Thanks
Jens
