Supporting the armoured spear-tip, significant close support artillery units were placed forward of the rest of the regimental support units. Initially deployed in the Plaza of the Emperor's Glory, retaken in heavy fighting weeks prior, each artillery squadron was assigned to one of the core groups to follow on as objectives were taken to provide the maximum coverage possible while minimizing the supply lines back to the stockpiles built up to support the advance. Primarily consisting of the Manticore MRL system outfitted with the 'Storm Eagle' cluster munitions allowing an operational range of 30km. Each missile delivers a payload of multiple high-explosive warheads which separate from the main body of the rocket at the apex of its trajectory. These warheads have a devastating impact on both infantry and armor formations and were instrumental in disrupting counter-attacks from the enemy.

Historical Note: Attrition is the fate of all Imperial Regiments in service to the glory that is the Emperor's guard. The Imperium is simply too vast and the Guard too large to contemplate any form of traditional resupply or reinforcement. As the inevitable casualties mount, even ones as notoriously large as the T'tenba Merkava regiments which are known to rival the famed Krieg siege regiments in size, will eventually lack the forces to remain combat effective. The Manitcore squadron above is one such example originating from the sister 879th Merkava regiment having taken the brunt of the initial invasion was eventually deactivated and rolled into the 965th, 222nd Merkava and 564th Nagmash (mechanized) regiments. The tanks still sporting the traditional woodland camouflage scheme typical of the 879th.

Of all the variants of the Land Raider, the Proteus ranks amongst the most ancient. So rare in the modern age to be almost mythical status. While the Phobos pattern now is almost ubiquitous with it's superior abilities as an assault transport, as befitting the current role of the Astartes, the scarred veterans of the Long War will find the greater speed and the almost impossible to replicate sensory abilities of the machine's augury web the ideal heavy raider.

Just as quickly as the Iron Warriors appeared to counter the Imperial advance were they to disappear, apparently abandoning the capital to the Crusade forces. Soon it was to be made evident that this withdrawal was to allow the myriad Guard regiments tasked with the assault to lengthen their supply lines allowing fast armour squadrons to attack and disrupt the lightly defended supply lines, ranging wide through the deep deserts throwing the Imperials into disarray while they attempted to consolidate their hard fought gains. This company of Land Raiders were to enter a running 3 hour battle with elements of the Cadian 65th Light Armoured regiment, costing the Imperium no less than 12 Leman Russ Conquerors before disappearing into the trackless sand.

Still the question lingered...why were the Iron Warriors here and what was their purpose?
