Looks good, fully agree on the mk1 vs mk2 vindicator. The mk1 predator, whirlwind, basilisk, and leman russ were all more detailed than their mk2 counterparts as well, though there the difference is less extreme.

Thanks, guys.

My theory on the Vindicators is that the mk.2 designs were cheaper and simpler to cast. The old models are quite heavy; they're solid metal when they could easily be hollowed out at the bottom. So if it is hollow, the newer design uses less metal, is simpler to cast being a single piece, and the reduced detail might mean less wear and tear on the mould, too. Just a shame it looks like crap.

So I finally got my act together and finished off the Thunderbolts. There are still some parts of them that I'm not completely happy with, and there are some places where the paint is a little thick from repeated repaints. But they'll do, and it's great to have the damn things out of the way, rather than sitting on my desk badly half-painted and looking a mess.

I have another squadron of Thunderbolts and a pair of Marauders still to paint for my Imperial Air Wing. I'll probably do some more Chaos models first, though.

Thanks, all!

Current GW Baneblade Brown, covered with previous-generation GW Devlan Mud wash. Some additional shading with Coat d'Arms Ink Wash Brown. Highlighted up with a mix of Baneblade Brown and Coat d'Arms White.

I started with a base coat of Horizon Blue, one of the first-generation Citadel paints in the cylindrical pots (I still have a nearly-full pot of this and it hasn't dried out noticeably at all). I then tried shading with a very dilute wash of Coat d'Arms Ink Wash Blue. At this point something went badly wrong. I think I used too much water when thinning down the ink but I'm not certain. Whatever the reason, the ink kept pooling in the wrong places and leaving weird tide-marks as it dried.

Eventually, I had to re-do the ink by adding it only to the areas I wanted shaded and not diluting it too much. I then painted over the rest with the original Horizon Blue before highlighting with a mix of Horizon Blue and Coat d'Arms White.

Huh, I'm a little surprised there are no missiles / bombs / whatnot on the undersides of the wings.

That in turn leads me to my lament that on things like aircraft, all of the neat bits are on the underneath, exactly where people can't see them in Epic. Some games have cool 3D stand adapters, but that's not us.

Derail complete, thank you for your attention.

PS - Good stuff!

Well, turns out there's nothing like taking a clear, hi-res photo of a formation to make you realise that it still needs some work.

I 'finished' these last night. When I got home from work today, I took them outside to take a photo. Had a look at the pic I'd just taken. Back to the painting table!

So, following a bid of a touch-up, here is a finished company of Chaos Predators, using turrets and sponsons from Shapeways.

Not sure whether to paint more Imperial aircraft or another Chaos formation next. I'll just have to see where the inspiration takes me!
