Hey TCers,

I'm new to this scale, but have embarked upon a project to redo all my Kings of War figures in this scale - there's some good 6mm fantasy figures out there now.

Years ago, I'd made up some small Epic armies, and really liked the look of Games Workshops Texture paints - but it's kind of a pain to use (rather thick) and expensive.

I'd prefer to avoid grass or flock, as I think that just looks too weird at this scale. Or are there any good products out there?

I've not had great luck with just straight up PVC glue and sand. Looks too uniform and a bit weird - particularly if I've based my guys right onto the base, so they have that "pedestal" effect of their personal base atop the unit base...

Any tutorials, advice, suggestions on how to get a nice, rough, sorta natural looking base? Thanks!

I like my bases to look good, but be really easy to do at the same time.

These are a mix of GW Argellan Earth (The thicker you slap it down, the larger the cracks) and Vallego sandy paste.
Then a quick sepia wash over the two once dry

I use super fine hobby ballast with a small ammount of a little larger ballast mixed in. I also add large fish tank rocks to my based in places to break them up some and add a little extra pop to them. One of the big things to do when working with sand is sealing it, with a 50/50 mix of glue and water( i use Titebound wood glue for all my bases). Once thats dry you can pick a brown of your choice not to dark do a 75/25 brown to water mix and just coat the ballast with it, once dry use the agrax earth wash from GW on the rocks and it adds a nice contrast for the bases. I'm a fan of the fake grasses for bases it adds extra detail, as well as flock i'll post some examples of my work.

Image
Did some drybrushing and once done added in some black washes in spots to break up the uniform of the colors.

Image
Dark color with a mix of flock and fake grass, 6mm fantasy giant cyclops from Microworld. Once the flock is secure i soak it in super glue it drys hard and won't get knocked off.

Image
Just used fake grass here with a dark base also.

Image
Lighter brown with the dead grass from GW, I really like this grass it contrast very well with the miniatures and bases.

Image
Same technique described but i added extra drybrushing to the base to make it pop more, the fake grass is a silfor tuft from GW.

Bunker objective same style as above.

Vallejjo make a superior range of textured paints. They are cheap and come in big tubs, with a texture that's just right for brushing on. Here's some used on 6mm fantasy, the figures are stuck onto 1mm styrene and textured paint then applied:

the end result is fairly similar to the effect Blindhorizon has with sand and glue, just a personal choice as to which you find less effort to apply!

Yes I will vouch for the Vallejo stuff myself, I use it for everything!

Vallejo Sandy Paste is the roxxors. Inexpensive, easy and forgiving to work with. You can water it down to make a slurry which is good to provide pebbly texture to things or to use a blade to get in between say the legs on your infantry to hide the/tecture the plinth base. When applied straight it's able to be moulded into natural shapes easily to make ground of different textures (both techniques can be applied). You can pre mix it with paint/pigment to color and/or wash it afterwards to tint and color it as well.

protip: take a chunk of charcoal and stick it in a plastic bag. Go whack it with a hammer and use the tiny broken bits as the basis for stones and whatnot. You can literally stick it in the textured paint after application and when the paint dries, it will hold it fast.

edit:
This here had the bases done with straight sandy paste that then once dry was was hit with the Army Painter strong tone quick shade to harden it and tint to look like desiccated ground.

This here has a more muddy look by washing the sandy paste afterwards with GW graveyard earth to tine and then hitting it with devlan mud.

I've been meaning to check what it is I've been using, but it's a Vallejo paste. I have a feeling it's the White Pumice?

When I get time I'll put some photos up of my IG tanks & infantry I've based with it. I absolutely love the stuff, paints up well and has great texture without being over the top.

I'll be converting over to the vallejo sandy paste, i never knew about it. It will save me some serious time, what i do now is very labor intensive.

Is this grass shorter than the regular one from GW?

Vallejo sandy paste has been used on all my recent bases with areas of PVA'd on sand for the more rocky areas it's really handy stuff.

I use baccus static grass, it's great and shorter than normal, so it doesn't look goofy.
