Well done Reedar (and Pigmar crew) on organising a great event. Great atmosphere and fun day overall.

Thanks to my three opponents on the day too.

Great to bump into some familiar faces along with plenty of new ones. lol, with this only being my fourth tournament (as player) in four years, everyone's a new face to me :-)

Chuffed with the awards & prizes. Thanks everyone who voted my way :-)

Looking forward to next year.

Many thanks all for a tiring but enjoyable day. A good venue (even if parking was a bit 'interesting'), plentifull terrain and excellent food (please pass on our thanks).

I do hope someone took pictures of the armies, especially Broken bayonets Ferals - scratch built marvels with an extremely humorous twist.

More later after I have had a sleep.

Well that was a long day, out of the house for 21 hours.

My thanks to Russell, Dave and Darren for three great, but completely different games. Also thanks to Steve for doing the majority of the driving, means I can wake up fairly fresh this morning.

When I get my cables out I have couple of pictures to post and some thoughts from my games.

Great fun yesterday, thanks to everyone and especially Reedar, Ginger and Alansa for being great opponents.

Would be interested in swapping notes with the other Vanaheim players, what did you find worked? I'm of a mind to run with 3 Vulture formations in future rather than taking the Storm Troopers.

250 Fire Prisms
200 Vampire
200 Jet Bikes + Vyper
200 Jet Bikes + Vyper
100 Rangers (4)

This is an assault heavy list, the intention being to keep two mutually supporting groups moving forward to assault into the opponents table half, supported by the Bombers and long range shooting from the Fire Prisms, which together with the Rangers protect the Blitz. The Vampire provides a mobile threat and can contend objectives if necessary.

This worked extremely well against Broken bayonet's Feral Orks which were out-activated, relying on their formation sizes for strength. In 4 assaults, two of which were combined, they were able to wipe out two formations and seriously inconvenience three others. However, these epic battles took a lot of time and the game finished at the end of turn 2 in a straight draw.

I had a lot of difficulties against Scutarii's Vanahaim, which stood off and shot holes in the main Eldar formations, the threat of which made it difficult for the Eldar to concentrate together. I did manage to launch a strong attack with the Vampire borne Warp Spiders that took out the opposing BTS, but since we were both being very cautions, this game also finished at the end of turn 2 in a straight draw.

Calum's Dark Angels Deathwing was a really scary proposition, containing 8 formations of Terminators! I castled everything beside my Blitz and waited, five formations of Terminators including the SC duly teleported in surrounding my castle, only attracting 4BMS across three formations. Then I won the Strategy roll!
This allowed the Eldar to break out using a rolling assault with the BTS Warp Spiders followed by both Guardian formations - destroying all but one terminator from three formations. To be fair, this was just about the best position for this Eldar army to be in; multiple supported formations within assault range of enemy that have BMs, but even so I was slightly surprised at the result. Then another three formations appeared and the Marines won the strategy role in turn #2, and the tables were turned.

Indeed this game came very close to an extremely rare result. It all hinged on an assault where a terminator formation engaged a damaged Guardian formation hiding in ruins. This battle took three rounds before the terminators were entirely destroyed. As a result, I regained control of an enemy T&H objective and was able to contest my Blitz for a 3-0 win. But the assault could easily have gone the other way, which would have left Calum in control of my Blitz and a T&H objective. He also came very close to destroying my BTS, which would therefore have left us both controlling 2x objectives and destroyed BTS for a 3-3 draw. As such it was much closer than the score suggests.

Many thanks to Broken Bayonet, Scutarii and Calum for three cracking games.

(And I also threw more '1's than any of them, so still keep my 'crown' :D )

Thanks to Reedar etc. for organising an excellent event, and to my three opponents!

Mini-batrep, round one: Hello_Thrallax's Orks

Having no transports at all in my list, I went for some very aggressive garrisoning with the two DG Retinues, including the Contagion Engines in the BTS formation as they only have 15cm move. The Plaguereaper formation then held the centre. My Plague Zombies then did their usual trick of teleporting in across the middle of the enemy line to slow down the hordes of Orks (see photo 2).

Notable events were the first of the Ork Landas bouncing off a lone Plaguehound Titan, losing combat and spending most of the rest of the game cowering behind a woodland. Unfortunately for the other Landa, it's landing point was (by the time it landed) covered by six Defilers (my sole source of AA) and a Plaguehound on Overwatch. Although almost all the Orks made it into combat, they got severely mauled by the Death Guard Retinue and again broke, wiping out the Landa.

After such a bad first turn, Hello_Thrallax pulled things back very well in turn 2 and 3, with two of my big assaults failing and the game ending up with a winning draw to me at the end of turn three, I think neither of us had any objectives but there weren't a lot of Orks left on the table...

Mini-batrep, round two: Nat's Steel Legion

Deployment was similar to round one and the plentiful Disrupt barrages caused a lot of havoc, notably the Contagion Engines in my BTS formation doing an indirect shot with their sole barrage template onto the six broken leman Russes hiding by his Blitz objective - six Disrupt hits resulted in the whole lot melting away, leaving the Commissar's Fearless tank sitting there in a pool of goo. As much as I tried taking out that last tank (it was Nat's BTS) I just couldn't get through the reinforced armour, resulting in a 2-1 win at the end of turn four. The relative weakness of Plaguehounds against AV really showed here as the barrage was the only thing capable of hitting the Leman Russ and due to it being Fearless the Disrupt ability was doing nothing - a little taste of my own medicine.

The Plague Zombies didn't have much impact on the game as I tried charging the Deathstrike battery as the first activation of the game but they got mauled when the Deathstrikes rolled three sixes to hit... In hindsight, putting them on Overwatch to get cover would have been a better bet.

Mini-batrep, round three: Dinodeath1's Tau

The BTS Retinue with Contagion Engines garrisoned on my far left flank, facing off against a big Kroot formation. Due to the speed of the Tau and a relatively open right flank I largely went for a denied flank deployment with hardly anything on the right, hiding most of my warmachines out of sight behind a central urban area which contained the other DG Retinue.

This was Dinodeath1's first time facing Death Guard and it showed - he got far too distracted by the Plague Zombies that were across his left flank (the open area on my right flank) and didn't keep the Hammerheads and the Broadside BTS far enough back to take advantage of range, the only gun in my force with a range greater than 45cm were the three Contagion Engines which meant wasting the firepower of the rest of the formation.

Notable events:
Plague Zombies survivng insane amounts of AP fire from the Fire Warriors.
Dinodeath rolling stupid numbers of ones to activate formations.
A Crisis Suit formation doubling up to shoot at the central DG Retinue and breaking before they could even shoot due to the other DG Retinue being in Overwatch with a Disrupt Ignore Cover barrage.
Sacrificing two Plaguehounds to take out the Crisis Suits and Supreme Commander, specifically because Dinodeath kept rolling ones to activate.
The two barrage templates from the Plaguereaper formation causing utter havoc, eventually destroying the broken Broadside BTS because they were too close to a visible formation.

Round three ended 2-0 in my favour on turn four, with two enemy side objectives and the BTS.

Fourth place, woo! Although it's notable that there were a lot of low-scoring games on the day.

Looking forward to seeing you again in July Reedar. I may be kind and leave some gaps between each of the trench sections ( lava board ) this time :D

Hi Kyuss, I'll post a few pics of the Ferals here on Thursday.
Unfortunately, photos taken by myself of tournament action have ended up blurred, bar a few ( didn't realise my phone camera was left on Macro from previous night's close up's- of Feral's) Update on Thur.

I am still finding that I am suffering from a lack of AT shooting. Yes, there are Lightings and Marauder Destroyers, but I like to have formations on the table.
I am more tempted to drop down to one Vulture and take some Destroyers instead, but I know that I'll just lose them to failed armour saves.

For the next (far off) review I am thinking that we should look at a Vendetta formation costed similarly to the Vultures.
