Though I am definitely a part of it I cannot help but think of the already mentioned mental IP lock in that GW has accomplished. I don't know about 6mm in general, but although production costs fall, the Epic community really has to step up and find ways to manage the creation of (hopefully compatible) IP to break those chains that are stifling the present development of the hobby.

This is all about the current and near future development. However, it will probably take a while before we all have cheap 3D scanners to produce tons of 3D-scanned and reproduced minis of good quality.

Do you mean something like a 6mm version of Warpath or dust tactics, or a completely new IP?

I think part of the appeal of EPIC is that it is part of a familiar IP that everyone knows.

You cannot copyright a style such as Grim Dark. You can copyright a Leman Russ but not boxy WW1 styled slabbed sided tank

Must admit, on the Dirtside Facebook page, some new 6mm items are being promoted from Shapeways that are very nice, and certainly not bound to anyone's IP; Latest one was some engineering powersuit/Mecha that looked really great without stealing many ideas form copyrighted material like movies and such -

With all the good Sci-fi 6mm out there ... I think it's safe to say, 6mm Sci-fi has a great future. I've said it before ... GW is not the only game in town ... and if you notice they dumped Epic ... So Frakk'm ! :gah >:D Especially with all the new stuff, Onslaught, CinC/PFC, TMG, SCP/Exodus Wars, DRM, Microworld, Khurasan, Darkest Star, GZG, BT, etc., etc. ... if you can't find something there to like ... U ain't look'n ! ;D

I agree completely with Legion 4 here and I think the Shapeways model and home hobbyists are going to only strengthen the 6mm field. GW didn't start 6mm SF, though their ancestral company QT Models had a terrific line of SF microarmor including the ultimate non-humanoid infantry from a classic novel ( Polarians ), as well as a huge and varied range of vehicles. One company to whom this scale wasn't even that important - remember, the Epic range was far larger in Forge World's catalog than the main GW one for years - Doesn't make a blind bit of difference to the sub-genre as a whole.

Carlos, thanks. I try. 8) ;D
