That's without any zoom at all..... Im just not sure if the camera is up to giving that much detail on something as small.

Nice work so far! For photographing Epic models I find it's actually best to stand back a bit and use the zoom on the camera. I usually stand about 3-4 feet away, select highest resolution possible, and zoom in a bit, then crop out the edges on the PC later. And the more light the better.

This is basically how I do it, even using my (cheap & old) SLR. Macro never gave good results for me on minis, but then I have a very generalist lens which won't help. Then again, I'm finding that (in good light) my iPhone is now as good as my camera ! :-)

Your biggest problem there looks like jpg compression. Given away by the speckle around the model edges. Do you heavily compress before uploading? If so try to find a lossless compression technique. It might be that your Fuji might have automatic compression on the camera if it's quite old (my old cannon ixis was the same and terrible for miniature photos.)

Great painting (and figures) all the same !

Crazy good looking stuff! The pics look out of focus and fuzzy. Zoom might be the culprit, depending on cam. Digital zoom is of course pointless. Better to crop manually afterwards.

Edit: just realized that you did not use zoom. Sorry.

Mmm.... Ive played around. Not sure if this is any better:

It looks a lot better to me - I can make out the insignia on the full-sized photo on your photobucket site. It still looks like a high ISO shot, so try to get more light onto it. If it was taken at ISO 100, then you're probably getting all you can out of that camera. I recommend a lamp aiming at figure-height, aiming 45 degrees from the mini's front, and another one roughly above (a little further forward). Use pieces of white paper around the mini as reflectors so that you don't get too much contrast.

I find it harder to shoot Epic minis with SLRs or other interchangeable-lens cameras - it's usually difficult unless you have a lens meant for macro shooting. If you don't, zoom and crop. (You might want to do that even if you do have a macro lens, to get more of the photo in focus.)

Tried something for the Mechanicus in the form of some Crusader Robots. Only being a 150pt unit I didnt spend as long on them as I could. Pretty happy with how they turned out.

Also got to play with a friends SLR. First shots and (being a guy) I havent read the manual (thats next on the list) but Im pretty happy with the pics considering I just took them in some pretty poor light. Will try to get some better pictures over the weekend.

The robots look even better now that they are painted.

I 3D printed the robots. Ive uploaded them to ShapeWay so you're welcome to grab some for yourself:

In other news Ive managed to actually get a bit more painting done. So I now have a Blood Angel squad (ok, so quite a way off having an actual formation, what can I say, IM slow :p). Not much light to try for photos but this is the best I could manage:
