How do you decide if a target detachment is in cover? Let's say some units are behind woods and touching the terrain piece, so they count as being in cover (see battles book, page 51). Some other units of the same detachment are in the open. Is the detachment considered to be in cover when you check for the number of attack dice?

Do you use a percentage value? (f.e. 50% in cover)

Damn, WRONG section. This belongs to the Epic 40k thread. I'm really sorry about this. Could somebody move or delete this, please?

There is the option to choose to target only those models in the open which means only those models can become casualties.

We always played that if you wanted to target the whole detachment including those in cover then you had to use the targets in cover FP column.

If 50% or > are in cover, they get the cover benefit ... that's the way we do it ...

That's the BFG convention which Epic40k rule set is largely inspired by

Epic40k came before BFG not after. ;)

Ahh I had it backwards then. :)

I guess the idea still has merit. The most widely played form or descendant form of the 3rd ruleset then has worked well for handling it that way in the squadron rules. Might have some use here-not dissimilar problems.

This is the rule we used because it was written in the rulebook :)
We liked it. It's typical for 3rd edition to simplify complex actions.

One other option is of course to just split the detachments firepower between the two types of target.
