Will totally be there as a player, spectator or whatever! :)

Maybe there could be a mini(geddon) side event for people who can't make it into a team?
See what i've done there?! ;D

Whether the number of players is even or odd is only relevant, if the organisers allow partial team matching - i.e. evening out the number of games against each team.

If they go by the swiss system and apply it to teams, the number of teams has to be even and the team size is of no relevance.

Team size is relevant if you are not combining points from won games, but just giving the team 3 points (for example) if they win more games than the team they were up against?

Or using the WM/H style event were its 1 point for a win 0 for anything else and you have enough rounds to produce a single team that is undefeated.

I was only talking about the standby team aspect Ulrik mentioned in the post just prior to mine.

That'd be great. I'd already signed up to my local game club's trip to the expo with the expectation of getting in on another epic tournament next year. Though I jest about a Celtic team, I doubt I would really qualify for the EEC ! ;-) A side event for us mere mortals would be good though - and provide presence to let the world (Birmingham) know epic still lives ! :-)

Ps - Plus I look forward to revenge on those Krieg (particularly if they've suffered the nerf bat by then ! ;-)

I'd be up for that if main event fill. Most EUK events are in really awkward places to get to by train for me (have to detour into london first and then change multiple times etc) whereas i can get a train direct to birmingham! Which is why im extra keen to go – because i can actually get there :P

Just use weighted sums if you've got irregular sized teams. Assumes you've got at least everyone playing a few games to even out the statistical issues.

I still think something on the lines of the following would work:

- 4 spaces offered to all countries.
- Then all remaining places go on 'general sale'.
- Run tournament using swiss system.
- If players from same country drawn together for game move these players to next closest scoring opponent from different country (or have a very clever spreadsheet that does this).
- Prize for individual 'European Champion'.
- Prize for 'European Champion Team' based on 3 highest player's scores from each county added together.

This means that even if there was only one representative from one country they would have something to play for, and only three players would be needed to compete for the team prize (even two players may get a good placing). Additionally, if for whatever reason one member of a team could not attend due to last minute unforeseen circumstances the others in that team could still do ok.

One thing I really liked about the EEC at least from the POV of an outsider, is that teams can only contain a maximum of one of each race, means you're not *all* turning up with krieg or necrons or whatever the current unbeatable army is.... also I feel really pushes the 'team' aspect of the event, which is a big draw for me :)

I'd rather de-emphasize the individual standings. If you run it as a proper Swiss I think the team standings will fade into the background a bit. I'd prefer to go the other way and remove the Best General prize - proper scheduling for a team tournament won't give a fair competition for naming the best single player.

You could simply remove the individual champion element of my suggestion and just have the team prize.

Good point. No duplicated armies is definitely better.

Yeeees, but I don't think an individual Swiss is the best way to handle a team tournament. I'd rather do a team swiss, maybe with some sort of playoff in the second day:

If there were exactly 8 teams, the first day (3 games) could be team vs team with a swiss system to determine matchups for round 2 and 3. Then on day two, you'd have two brackets determined by the rankings from day 1:

Top four face off in a set of semi-finals followed by a final and a bronze final (so 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3, then winner vs winner and loser vs loser). At the same time the bottom four play for 5th to 8th place (and, of course, for the fun of playing Epic!): 5 vs 8 and 6 vs 7 and then winner vs winner and loser vs loser.

The idea of the EEC was to be a team tournament. So it should be team scores that matter.

Depending on your goals, I would use a standard swiss system as on any ordinary tournament, with players being replaced by teams.

Or if playing as many nations as possible is the goal I'll take something comparable to this years EEC.

I find Ulriks idea interesting, but not well suited for such a small tournament.
I assume 3rd to 6th place may be very close together after the first day. But the teams below 4th, will have no chance in climbing above 5th place, but may end up having more tournament points than the 3rd or 4th placed.
Also it is quite possible that teams will play each other twice even so there are enough teams available to prevent it. And for me one of the goals was to bring players from different nations together and play as many different nations as possible.
