So I'll be doing Necrons next and am looking for new ways to raise up minis off a base. I've seen what looks like poeple using metal rods, but cant be sure.

Anyone have any good tutorials or suggestions on securely lifting skimmers off their bases besides regular GW flying bases?

I use a pin vice and the brass rod that came with it, but a dremel or drill with paperclips or even cocktail sticks would work so long as you're cutting a hole there same diameter as the rod.

If your bases are not suitable for drilling, you can bend a paper clip and glue it to the top of the base.

Peep this technique from our very own master of the OTC

I dislike the height (looks flying vs skimming to me) but that's a matter of the length of the wire. I'm going to rebase all my 'Crons using paper clips now.

+1 for paper clips and a pin vice. It's the future!

I use clear acrylic rod glued into a slight depression of the appropriate size drilled into the base. It looks great but isn't very resilient

I used 1.5mm welding rod (I have an almost limitless supply from work...) for my land speeders and will be doing the same for my eldar, cut to length, drill a hole in the coin (sorry your majesty) glue it in and stick the model on top.....

I used a 1/2mm flat-head nail on all my eldar skimmers. Epoxy glued to the coin with hole drilled into the mini - some filler covers the head when texturing the base - not had one break (yet...)

I made these from 25mm bases and short lengths of piano wire. I haven't glued the vehicles in place, just drilled holes for the stands to slot into. That way I can remove the bases for storage/transport.

Another vote for paperclip and drilling here. Kryt mentioned bending it over and glueing on bases you can't drill into, i tend to go further and but a blob of milliput over the bent end.

I've been trying to decide on a way to do this for flyers that doesn't involve magnets (which for some reason I just can't get to work). Is pressure fit enough to keep the models on during play?

Just remembered one bit of advice if you go the nail route - I had some brass nails laying around, which though nice and easy to cut are very smooth and it was a pig to get the primer to stick. Even now they occasionally get caught in play and it scratches off. In future I would use galvanised nails as it would expect the slightly rougher texture would hold paint better.

Matt,

I would go with the pin vice and the paper clips. Worked a treat with my Land Speeders and other skimmers. I like to conceal it amongst rocks or ruins on the base.

Cheers
Aaron
