From the perspective of the rules as written, Magnus is correct. They need nobz from "somewhere", to act as their command.
Whether or not their role will stay that way is more or an issue for platinum.
I personally have always used them as independent units. I don't consider them all that useful without that feature. However I do lots of things in my own games that are different/contrary to the rules as written.
That is why I am also so "in" on new rules or variants. Which is why I have the hots for Platinum.
But a promise is a promise, and outside of error correction/omissions, gold will stay as it is. Warts and all. Because the reality is (as has been made obvious by our many discussions on diverse topics across time), that a LOT of people have absolutely no problem with gold the way it is and like it that way.
For those whom want something "more" or "different", Platinum (and Bissler's Net Epic Evolution) are the ones to follow.
