To take it further, you could design the middle track unit so that the side guns from your Hera fit on the outside. Then if you want to take the reuse scheme further, you could design it to use two of your Here Turrets (Stormhammer style). You could also do what the guys at steel crown does, and add a top plate to your hull so that you have to option of dooing a large turret with a BIG ASS cannon on the same hull.

Ah ok - I see what you're saying now good ideas.

OK - Here's the first WIP of the Hestia Support Tank. This model will come with both Laser Cannon and Flame Thrower Turrets. I like the small turret up front - leaving plenty of room in back for some troops, and well away from the rear loading ramp.

Will the flame thrower turret version have oversized propellant tanks on the rear hull?

And yes, a Stormhammer-eque big heavy tank in this design pattern would look awesome.

Not this tank. For a heavier dedicated flame throwing tank, I'd like the fuel tanks more integrated into the Hull rather than bolted to the outside - which would obviously be a juicy target for the enemy! :)

I understand and that's always been a pet peeve of mine with other companies renditions of "flamethrower" tanks. Though having the propellant towed behind, as in the real world old school flame thrower tanks, makes a bit more sense than carrying it on the outside even if it isn't as sexy looking.

My question was posted because I was hoping it wouldn't be so...unless it did look as cool as all heck. :)

Glad you're still making the attempt at common sense when you design your stuff. Anytime you might have a question on stuff like that, I can always help out.

Thanks! I plan on making a dedicated flame tank in one of the other Terran lines with an optional pull-behind fuel trailer like the crocodile.

About tanks on the utside: Most russian WW2 tanks had their fuel in extra tanks on the outside.

Those tanks were only for additional range when traversing the country side. They had quick-release mechanisms so they could be dropped when necessary and weren't carried when the fighting began. Plus, Soviet tanks ran on diesel fuel, which tended not to be as disastrous when hit by enemy bullets--it takes quite a bit more energy to get diesel to go boom Hollywood-style.

Besides, the armor on those vehicles could withstand a bit of diesel fire on the outside...it's when the flames got on the inside the trouble began. Tankers were far more mindful of their ammo being compromised than their fuel.

Think of the additional fuel tanks carried by escort fighters (Mustangs being a good example). They dropped them when the enemy was spotted. Of course, it was more important for a fighter to get rid of them, since the external tanks created significant drag and if they still had fuel in them, added additional weight.

But, in a sci-fi setting, the reasons could be completely different.

they used them to try to get past/near german tanks, they needed to keep on the move or they were toast if they got stuck without fuel.

whats better having all that fuel going on fire inside the tank or going on fire outside? id prefer outside, if theres a flametank i would have tanks on the outside and a longer barrel. maybe part armour them at the front of the fuel tank maybe a sloped armour short shell at the top but leave the rest unarmoured due to weight restrictions?

Not so fond of the turret placement. Makes the vehicle appear front heavy with the guns overhanging.

For a flame thrower, that is probably necessary. Keep the fiery end of the barrel as far forward as possible, so the propellant has as little chance as possible to drip onto a hatch or onto sensitive equipment.
