Has been a fun event and good to put many faces to forum names! :)

A '2 lists format' sounds fun to try.

Just for the people who want all the info in one place, the final result was

1. Tim Hunt
2. Kev Bott
3. Richard Laking
4. Mark Preston
5. Mike Thomas
6. Steve Gullick
7. Florian Hess
8. Dave Bartley
9. Simon Holyoake
10. Stephan Hess
11. Tom Sanders
12. Dave Thomas
13. Simon Partridge
14. Alan Saunders
15. Gavin McKenzie
16. Charles Nurser

Players best painted went to Simon Partidge for his excellent death guard, judges choice went to Alan Saunders for his codex marines, Alan also picked up the most sporting award as he recieved a nomination from all three of his opponents, what a gent! Poor old Charles picked up the wooden spoon....

Quick Reports

Game 1 - Charles (Steel Legion)

charles was using a variant of Richard's all-conquering guard list but with a shadowsword company instead of the russes and an extra flight of tbolts. Having seen the list prior to the event, I was bricking it, and for my first activation decided to air-assault a warhound intermingled with an infantry company, I hid the termies behind the warhound sheltering from most of the supporting fire, but going in double-outnumbered and with blast markers meant that even though the warhound died, Charles won the roll-off, exploding my thunderhawk and leaving my termies broken, they subsequently had a griffon shell land on them which killed two stands :( however Charles was very cautious in pushing forwards and I was able to cut his activations down by killing his artillery, hydras and sentinels, a lucky engagement from some scouts on his Reg HQ BTS broke them, and I subsequently shot them to death and wiped them out, a final air-assault from some bikes on his shadowsword company failed, which left me with a 3-0 win (BTS, TSNP, T&H)

Game 2 - Mark (Steel Legion)

mark had no flyers but lots of solid activations on the ground, I knew this would be an uphill struggle from the get-go and by halfway through turn 2 it was clear I was very unlikely to win, so I concentrated on holding for the draw, I managed to drag it to turn 4 and mark was only 1-0 up, but then of course we rolled to play a 5th turn! with virtually all of my army dead, mark was able to claim a 2-0 win with T&H and DTF, luckily my BTS survived unbroken to contest my blitz

Game 3 - Tim (Tyranids)

Marines don't do well against nids in my experience, and this was borne out, I tried to shoot up some swarms and cut tim's activations down on the first turn, and as I decided against corners (I felt bad that tim had spent his whole tournament playing diagonally....) I was up against it from turn 2 onwards, I was never really in the running as I didn't have the power to confidently kill his next swarms guarding his blitz and a T&H objective, and due to the activation disadvantage, recycling the terminators was most likely to get the thunderhawk eaten before it could take off, I managed to drop my bike marines on my own blitz and despite a barrage of overwatch fire killing half of them, broke the lone harridan claming the blitz, giving tim a 2-0 win on turn 3

I always find it interesting to read reports on my games and see how my opponent’s have felt that it has gone.
I decided to take Tyranids to this tournament and when with a heavy combination of Assault Swarms and Harridans backed up by a solid section of Hive Nests, Dominatrix, Genestealers and a Trygon.

1st game was against Gavin and his new Yme-Loc force. Whilst I felt that I had an even chance against all the Eldar skimmers, the first turn went badly for me as I managed to fail four activations and have a Harridan killed by Gavin’s Phoenix Bombers. This left me at the start of the second turn with effectively two waves of forces instead of one mass to swarm over the advancing Yme-Loc. The Avatar came down and with the Strategy Roll in his favour Gavin engaged an Assault Swarm with the Avatar and BTS Aspect Warriors. The Swarm was eventually wiped out, but not before the Aspects had taken a load of hits losing two or three Striking Scorpions, a Wave Serpent and most critically the Autarch from some cheeky supporting fire. The Aspects broke and fell back, but the game turned at this point. We were both expecting the Guardians to engage the next forward formation, Harridan & Gargoyles, only to roll a 1. Dead Autarch meant no re-roll and this provided critical for the Eldar as the rolling engagements were stopped and my Nids could choose their targets. Which they did breaking a formation of Hornets and sniping the BTS to claim the goal.
Whilst badly mauled Gavin still had options and he continued to push for the centre of the table, but when an engagement with one of his Falcon Hosts, against a Harridan, which drew his second Falcon host in to the combat failed the tide had turned fully into my favour. And from my glum at the end of the first turn I was very much surprised to force a 5-0 victory. More than anything I would say this game turned on a famous Gavin ‘1’ for the retain at the start of turn 2 more than anything else in this game.
It was well fought and always a pleasure to play.

2nd game was against RichardL and his token Marine Force. (It’s extra Championship points you know.) (And I’ll be doing the same later on this year. ::) ) It is always a difficult game against one of the best players current and past on the EA scene. Richard had a list which contained no Warhounds and he had made up with this with a Spacecraft and more activations. As with the first game we played corners and I set too marching my forces up the table and taking the hits to get into range for the next turn. Activations went a bit more smoothly, but again I lost a Harridan in the first turn to aircraft. However the Marine air assaults started to reduce my activations. I was lucky though at the start of the turn as the spacecraft hit three formations only to kill three Termagents and a Gargoyle.
Turn two started with the Trygon popping up in the woods near the Marine BTS and Blitz and the terminators coming down near my Blitz. Starting in the centre Richard assaulted my Dominatrix with his terminators which had charged forward to try and bolster my advance. My luck for the game happened here as 12 hits (4MW) saved later the unharmed Dom won the combat to stand supreme in the centre of the table. The second terminator formation then failed to engage the Nest Swarm on my Blitz and the game was on. We traded formations trying to break and wipe out as much as possible whilst never gaining enough advantage to win out right.
Main points of note were the Marine Landspeeders doubling, shooting and killing my Harridan bolstering my Blitz defence. They then subsequently won an engagement from the Hive Nest as I attempted to shift them. The Trygon and Raveners breaking the Marine BTS to hold the Blitz and almost win the game 2-1 at the end of the fourth turn until a Thunderhawk flew in to contest the objective. Counting back on points I just hadn’t finished off enough of Richard’s formations and it was approximately 400pts in his favour with me being thankful that we did not roll to go into a fifth turn. A tough, tough game against an opponent who can complain about their luck as much as me and still pull it out. I look forward to the rematch.

The final game was against Simon and more Marines. There were several things going for me in this game. As Simon has said above, Marines vs Nids don’t go well for him in his experience so I was up already. Simon was manfully running the tournament and I know how draining that can be and after my result against Richard I felt that I was out of the running for the tournament and relaxed into the game.
Whilst I won’t say that it was easy, the game felt more like a club night game where the game just slipped along. The dice went in my favour and I slowly stripped Simon of activations and pushed forward to claim a straight forward victory. On an Imperial Tactica note I’d say that you end up too square onto the Nids at the end of turn 1 Simon. If you had been lined up more on the angle you could have tried to hit the closer formations first whilst limiting the response back. But then again what do I know as I’m a rubbish marine player.

It was great to see everyone again and to meet Florian and Stephan. Plus, I’m looking forward to reading DaveT’s report of the day.

Just a quick one. Thanks to Simon for organising the event. A 'characterful' venue in a location within reasonable striking distance from London. A choice that seems to have born fruit attracting 5 players from down our way :)

Thanks also to my opponents, Mark, Charles and Steve for three laughter filled games and for *all* voting me most sporting. Really, that's made me feel all gooey and warm inside!

Also thanks to the judges for picking my army, that came as a real surprise. Honestly, there was a lot better on show in my opinion.

I think special congrats to Florian and Stephan, newbies to the euk scene, for solid mid field placings

Catch up with you soon. I'm heading off to the expo website now..

@Tim, you're definitely right, I definitely should have forced corners to give myself some more breathing room and hopefully string the nids out a bit more so I could deal with them with less fear of reprisal, but every game teaches you something!

looking at myself I'm very much a confidence player, I find if I honestly think I can win, then I perform better, in game 1 against Charles I knew his lack of experience gave me the advantage and I felt more confident throughout, against more experienced players such as yourself and Mark I think I expected to lose before we even began and perhaps played that bit worse because to me it felt like a foregone conclusion.... I need to have more faith in myself! I also need to paint my titans and speed freaks up too ;)

@Alan you deserved it mate, your army looked great on the table :) now get your prizes assembled and painted!

I wouldn't say playing corners gives you much respite and it actually allows the Nids to make good their failed first turn activations. I was more thinking that where the Nids come on mass forward you want to hit a flank of them first and then try to roll along the front over the next turn and a bit. Not as easily done as said, but that is what I try to do.

Indeed, thanks for organising Simon :)

Games wise, i had:

Game 1: Stephan - Marines
A rather unusual marine built with lots of whirlwinds and predators, while i did gain a new respect for the preds, and although having a bloody terrible first turn, losing both thunderhawks and my assault marines, the balance shifted in turn 2 thanks to Stephan starting to fail some armour saves, and having some combats go rather pear shaped for him. The fragile BTS meant i was able to take that out turn 1, and was able to consolidate this with sufficient objectives on turn 3 as well as keeping Stephan's forces out of my half of the board for a 5-0 win on turn 3.

Game 2 - Tim (Nids)
Always an interesting game, i got some early successes against the Nids, the most notable being a thunderhawk squad taking out a Harridan with a cheeky crit, but of course against Nids it's the second turn that they tend to bounce back, and bounce back they did! Tim's surprisingly aggressive use of the Dominatrix proved to be my undoing, as his impeccable saves caused my centre to crumble, and the abject failures to activate cost me heavily as well, and i soon had both terminator squads broken and running. At that point i thought it was pretty much over for me, but did what i could, and the landspeeders were superb in taking and holding Tim's blitz. However, i think i placed the objectives badly, and while i almost grabbed a second, i just couldn't stop Tim contesting it with the Dominatrix, and with a nest swarm on the other there was little i could do. Meanwhile things were going a bit pearshaped on my blitz, with the BTS failing to stay on overwatch (i can't believe how many failed activations i was getting over the course of the day with marines), and almost got eaten by the Trygon unit. In turn 4, only a cheeky thunderhawk drop managed to keep me in it, and it also managed to kill the Trygon as well, which was probably what gave me a winning draw in the end! Thankfully my Terminator armour saves improved, and Tim and I were soon battling to a stalemate. A very close game in the end, and i was really pleased with the marine's resilience, even when i didn't have the ability to take on his actual units in combat any more.

Game 3: Mark (Imperial Guard)

I got a lovely spaceship drop on this one, taking out his deathstrikes and manticores, although this did cost me my Devs from Mark's fearsome rough riders (i broke and had nowhere out of 15" to run to!) Despite feeling like i had the game in hand, Mark's excellent use of his Hydras gave me a real headache, and in the end more dodgy activations cost me the game, with a thunderhawk with a single blast marker needing to come on to win the game (by killing the BTS) on turn 3, and failed with a re-roll, despite it being a 2+. Sad times! Mark did a great job consolidating on this though, and managed to jam up the objectives well enough to keep it to a winning draw to me.

So close! Literally anything but a double one to win the event and the dice failed me. Still, 3'rd isn't too bad, and i actually really liked the marine list without the Warhounds - the extra activations are really nice, and overall i didn't find myself missing them too much. Not entirely sure about the space ship, it was great in one game, but didn't have much impact in the other two. May give it another run out at some point :)

I like the Spaceship because it gives the Marines that extra bit of flexibility when reviewing his transport options prior to each game, as this allows the Marine player to choose whether to planetfall, fly on or drive on (a decision made once you know who you are playing but before Objectives are placed).

Note this only applies to E-UK tourneys, but can be usefull if you build the list with this flexibility in mind . . .

Game 1-

Lots of failed activation rolls including a couple of failed re rolls. Poor armour save rolling, lots of missed shooting attacks, plenty of criticals against my War Engines and poor dice rolls in general.

Game 2-
