Right!

It is long overdue and so I will bring out some sci-fi city buildings that are not gothic!
(Go L4 you do that little dance!)

I will do a crowdfunding project as I simply don't have the funds to invest in an entire new range in one go.

The rough plan is to make some of the buildings modular and stackable.
So you will have say a city block ground section, with doors and what not and a roof section with err err the roof!
In between will be a middle section, you can add as many or as few of these as you want.

The design will be smooth, rounded and sloped.
No straight lines on the buildings where possible.

Think Mega-City One.
Image

But less huge and more practical!

I was thinking of making this a very small project without a million stretch goals.
I want to keep it small and manageable and make the target something that is likely to be met.

I have some ideas in my head and I have spoken to the Digital Sculptor that did my OKI buildings and he is on board.

So… Your feedback..

I was thinking of:

A small shop
A modular city block (3 core pieces)
A different modular city block (3 core pieces)
A medium municipal building
A factory of some sort

Now that is only 5 buildings but it is 9 pieces.
The shop can be painted in various ways so that you can have a row of them and they will look different.
The modular stackable blocks can be arranged in various heights so that whilst the same pieces, they all look different.
Again the municipal building can be painted so that it is a hospital or a town hall or or…
Just add the appropriate sign/statue/vehicles out the front.
Same with the factory.

Not a lot, but I want to keep the project small and be sure I can deliver than have a gazillion models and not be able to get them made.

You should have enough variants to make a convincing city with the bits.

If of course people go bonkers for it then I can use the excess funds to make more buildings available through the website later on.
Or start a new project and have a lower target and use the cash from the previous one.

Anyway, that is the plan for much later this year.

Michael

Yeah I'm down for that. If you can pull off something evocative of MC1/2 or Texas City (above :)) then hell yeah!

Mega-City 1 and Epic combining for the perfect nerdgasm! :o

One question though, are you going to make the building tops relatively flat so stands can be placed on top of them?

oooh good question. Hmmmm I was thinking not as that would lessen the coolness of it all.
But Epic players do seem to like to do that.
But then Epic players are not the majority of my customer base.
But then...

hmmmmm

Question though about that...
Why don't people just put the models aside instead of on the roof?
I always thought it looked a bit odd?

My avatar is a character from 2000AD and I have all the Dredd Complete Case Files (to date) so believe me, this is something I have thought long and hard about AB!

The reason I (and presumably others) like to place stands in the buildings is because makes it clear that stands are inside the building and therefore receive cover from incoming fire. I tend to use it also to get a POV for the stands of what they can see across the battlefield although this is a less relevant point because of the abstract nature of Epic...

This is a real functionality v aesthetics argument. The only way around it I can think of would be to have some sort of clear disc (like the base of a flyer stand) that could clip to the top and on which the stands could sit.

I guess you aren't too interested in the "functionality" part of the problem... :P

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of these but it is this particular stumbling block that has always left me scratching my head. There are balconies on the Dredd buildings but to make them wide enough to accommodate a stand is pretty unworkable. Even having them wide enough to accommodate an old stand with some overhang would mean that the balcony would have to be 1.5cm wide. The buildings do have some deep cuts on the odd side, but could they realistically be that deep, even with a balcony jutting out?

Hmm, given what I wrote in the first paragraph, I don't know why I've written the second. :-\

The thing about functionality is relative I guess.
I don't see the need to put troops on buildings to know they are in there, any more than I put troops on top of APCs to know they are in there either.

If I make them flat they just won't look as good.
I am not saying you are wrong to do that of course.

With the stackable city blocks, if it is that important to be able to place men on top...
Don't glue the roof section to the building, leave it loose and when the men are inside/on top, simply remove the domed roof bit and place them on the flat bit now showing!

:D

Hi!

Something like that would be very cool if it could be done. :)

How about inserting a few balconies onto the buildings where stands could be placed? If you're going with a MC1 vibe, that's one of the visual features of the buildings: Fluid, Often Asymmetrical, and usually one or more balconies.

This looks very interesting - but i agree, the ability to put stands on/in/around is a big plus for epic (and i would imagine any "army sized" game where there are many things to keep track of.) Of house you can just put the stands adjacent and inform your opponent ( as we do for apcs ) but for barrage templates etc it could cause arguments...

Trying to think of a compromise...

Could the blocks come in 2 sections; one which is comprises of pretty much all of the building, and a second, which essentially is a cap to make the building look cool and circular as AB intended, but the functional brutalists among us could choose not to use for game playing purposes (i.e. with the cap removed the building top is flat to accomodate our stands)?

Is this in any way feasible?
