above 3mm you'll still get hand cramp and wish for a jigsaw though.

Hi Madd0ct0r,

I tried scoring and snapping a couple of times but found that the edge it gave was half smooth half jagged so difficult to predict how much 'extra' material would be needed in order to sand/trim smooth.

I guess this would be fine for larger less intricate parts tho :)

good point. I think I've mostly used that technique for 40k orks and terrain, so it's not been something I noticed.

Excellent plasticard work. :)

If you are planning to get the thicker sheets consider what you will be cutting them with. I used a number of modeling knives but found life much harder going above 1mm (I wish I had my fathers bench jigsaw!). If you want 'thick' and you dont have a jigsaw I would work with thinner sheets, laminate then sand.

You want one of these jobbies, of whatever brand. It gouges out a thin groove rather than cutting or slicing, so you'll still need a few passes, and you'll have to take the width of the groove into account; but you don't have to push and pull the blade through thicker plastic anywhere near as much as a regular knife. It fairly glides over and into the styrene surface, lifting out skinny little strips as easily as peeling an apple.

And it doesn't make the plastic 'ride up' at the edges of the cut. ;D

Hi All,

I haven done much in the way of modeling for a while but thought I would try and ease myself back into things with something basic like blast markers. As I couldnt find any decent "How To" instructions I figured I would share the process I used to make a set of blast markers (Edit: ok I obviously didint look very hard, see below).

Im not claiming the original idea is mine nor am I claiming the end result is any good, Im just sharing the process :)

Edit:
Here are some links to other sites with good examples of how to make explosions and blast markers:

File comment: Parts List:

Metal washers
Plastic bag twisters or metal wire
Superglue
Under Brush shredded sponge (model rail way scenery)
Black paint (emulsion)
Grey paint (acrylic)
White paint (acrylic)
Yellow paint (acrylic)
Orange/yellow shade
Red shade

File comment: For large blast markers, cut 4 or 5 equal lengths of wire and twist them together at one end.

For small markers just use a single length of wire.

Flare the wires at the twisted end by a couple of mm and superglue to a washer.

Grab a clump of connected sponge under-brush dab one side with superglue and wrap around the base of the wires and press against the washer.

At this stage let the superglue soak into the sponge a little so that it sticks down.

File comment: Now flare out the top ends of the wire. These will form the streams of burning debris we associate with things going bang.

For the marker I have here I intend to have a central column of smoke with three burning debris so I will leave one wire pointing up and bend the other three out and trim.

Select some smaller clumps of sponge, dab glue on both it and the wire and stick firmly on the existing glued sponge.

Slowly build up sponge around your wire structure in this method.

Make sure you do NOT saturate the sponge otherwise you will end up with green furry fingers!

File comment: After you have covered your wire structure it should look something like this below. I wanted a fire ball erupting from the top of mine so I added more sponge to the top.

File comment: Now for the painting!

Get a reasonable size stiff-ish bush and blob on the back emulsion. Really make sure the paint soaks in as it will ensure a uniform colour and help bind the whole lot together.

Ok part two to follow after tea!

Annnd on to part two!

Attachment:
File comment: Using the same brush paint the bottom of the marker white. Really get the paint into the crevices and holes. Dont be worried about clogging up some of the smaller holes at this point. This bit is important as it will give the marker that "inner glow" of something burning from within.

In this case I have also applied the white paint to the tips of the debris arms and the underside of the fire ball at the top.... not sure if any of this will work out...

Attachment:
File comment: Once the white base paint has dried, top coat it with yellow acrylic. After the yellow has dried its time time to add some detail. Start with the orange/yellow shade and dab onto the yellow parts with a small brush. DO NOT uniformly cover the yellow area, leave it blotchy. Let the orange shade dry then move onto the red shade. This time concentrate the red around the boundary between the yellow and black boundaries.

File comment: Currently the whole thing looks rather flat. We start to give some depth by wet-brushing some black paint back over the boundary between the black and yellow. For this I would suggest using black acrylic as the emulsion I used didnt seem to cover properly to give good contrast.

At this point you will notice all the yellow and orange and red look as if they are on the inside of the explosion.

File comment: And finally dry-brush some grey over all the black areas. I started with a dark-ish grey and stepped up to a light grey. This makes the rest of the marker look like smoke billowing up from the fire benieth... well kind of...

And there we are. I hope this provides some use for anyone looking at making their own blast markers!

Cheers
Bob :)

I've got my wires twisted, will glue them down today. I've got 15 small and 3 large (counts as 5BMs) I think I'm going with a more fire in my markers like the below pic. I may also do another set (for the opposing side) with just smoke.

Hi Guys,

Im really looking forward to seeing some pictures of what you come up with! Thanks for the pic Cdr Sims, looking at my own I think I have the fireball inverted... should have done a little more research :-s. I still have more to make for myself but I think I will hold off to see what inspiration everyone else can come up with ;)

Cheers,
Bob
