As a totally unrelated suggestion, would this list be a good place to consider Forgeworld's Deathwind Drop pods? (whirlwind launcher, and/or assault cannon variants). Expendable teleporting BP direct-fire barrage weapons or assault cannon salvos could make for great area denial weapons on the defensive or spoiler attacks offensively. Could put them in the Assault sub-tree to limit their deployment in the Defensive-aspect list.

.........Deathwind drop pods are already in the core space marine list?

From what has been proposed, it sounds as though people are looking for core formations with upgrades being taken from either the Defence or Assault sections. Formations in the titans, air & spacecraft section can similarly be split into common, Defence or Assault formations.

How about if you elect to include the fortification/objective replacement you get to select the defensive options, if not, you get the more offensive list options? This could be tied to a special rule if needs be...

I think I'm leaning towards a more defence oriented list as it's currently topping the poll

most likely will include assault terminators, fortifications including the buy-as-transport-fortress suggested by Dobbsy, centurions in some fashion, achilles, larger vindicator formations, and possibly siege reaver/warlord titans

I'll probably leave thawks and caestus rams out (which is a shame as I have many of both!) warhounds of all types will be excluded

I'm undecided about spacecraft/podding..... I like the idea but you can already play codex marines as a drop list, I could be convinced otherwise though....

Sounds great :) Most people have polled for a siege defense list and siege defence is the Imperial Fists specialty, what they are known for. You can always play your models as the core list sometimes too to make use of the Thunderhawks and that.

Lets focus the list appropriately and leave other lists cater for siege attacking SMs instead e.g. Siege Assault Vanguard, Minotaurs, ect.

Why not include IF spacecraft that attack as normal but don't drop or transport? Assume the Fists are all on the ground in their defenses already, while the spacecraft is providing fire support only. They'd cost less points than normal, obviously.

IMO having an Imperial Fists list that can be both a defensive and offensive siege list (though having to choose one or other in Rmy selection) would be the best chance of turning out an approved marine siege list rather than multiple obscure forces and chapters

Interesting discussion with interesting ideas

I do wonder if it's necessary to have the single list with two sets of upgrades or formations depending on units picked, I'd rather keep the list more simple, and cater to a core theme (in this case siege defence)

I am more than happy to develop a second list containing the more aggressive elements, I don't think that there is much difference between having two lists, and one with moderately complex and restrictive upgrade paths

I've started putting together a proper v0.1 list which I'll put up later this week (I hope)

As people have said, this list is named Imperial fists as they're typically the boys the imperium turns to when they want someone to sort out a siege, but there's nothing to say the salamanders or lamenters or whoever couldn't field it

With this in mind, a second, related list is equally open to being used as any chapter but in name it may be used as the imperial fists

Alternatively if enough attacking elements are included in the main list it will probably function perfectly fine in an attacking role and there may be no requirement beyond the scope of the first list anyway!

I think it may be worth including a few either/or options, but I'm not so sure about how significant these should be about playstyle...

Something like Thunderhawks OR bright yellow armour, giving the opponent +1 to hit?

To throw a left field idea into the mix; how about maybe adding an option for 0-1 Fellblade SM superheavy tank to the list?

The Imperium lost the ability to make Fellblades long ago and the background in the Imperial Armour book notes "only a few" chapters still have these ancient relic war engines by the 41st millennium. However back in the Heresy the Imperial Fists were known as one of the top few users of them out of the legions, with them "making extensive use of the Fellblade", so it's probable they'd have one or more kicking around for when needed. If included it should definitely be rare and a 0-1 rather than free choice. It would fit well with the theme of the list as a slow, powerful, tough defensive unit. The main gun is powerful, but it's only one shot on a tank that would probably cost 300 or so points. Some of us might have fellblade models and though they're in the heresy list it would be nice to have a regular epic list to use it in.

Stats would be something like:
FellBlade Superheavy Tank
WE 20cm 4+ 5+ 4+
Twin Fellblade Cannon 75cm MW2+, TK(1)
Quad Lascannon Sponsons 45cm 4 x AT4+
Twin-Linked Heavy Bolter 30cm, Fwd
Demolisher Cannon 30cm, Ignores Cover, FxF
DC4, Reinforced Armour. Critical Hit Effect: Destroyed. Units within 5cm of the model suffer a hit on a 6+.

Actually you aren't the first to suggest that idea Glyn....

How is a list that uses a core, but has two sets of options depending on if you choose assault, and defence, really any different than 2 lists, one core with assault, one core with defence?

It isnt, which is why I'm leaning to a single list with a single set of upgrades, I'm writing it now....

There is a big difference.

As Steve mentioned, one list will get many more playtests than two.

It's called bundling bills up to get them passed.

I like the idea of the Fellblade as well (it is a beast of a tank with those stats).
I really hope there's a local player that wants to trial this list... Iron Warriors vs Imperial Fists... ohhh yeah :)
One question though, why is it 4DC and not 3 like all the other Imperial Super Heavy Tanks?

I think it's meant to be considerably tougher than a baneblade.....
