I've noticed a few heavy Epic painters advocate painting infantry still on the sprue. That leads me to an interesting question...do you guys recommend removing mold lines on 6mm infantry? I'm normally pretty obsessive about cleaning flash, but at this scale, with these tiny models, it seems like a potential waste of time. What is the consensus?

I don't paint on the sprue, but I do clean up mold lines. I guess I'm a stickler too.

I try to clean up the mold lines on 6mm infantry. Honestly, I do. But at that scale I usually end up missing some.

I hardly ever remove mold lines from infantry. I'm not that picky and it does feel like a big waste of time to me. I'm a little more picky about bigger plastic minis like dreads, robots and bikes.

+1

I also de-sprue before painting as I prefer to be able to turn the mini around to get all sides etc.

I always take stuff off the sprue before prepping/painting. On the mould lines, every time I don't remove them I end up regretting it, especially since I use a lot of washes. Washes and inks are like putting neon lights on those lines

OK, thanks for the opinions guys. I'll go back to tidying up some Onslaught not-Tyranids now.

unless your really in a hurry to get things painted for a game then you should always try to remove them. The time and money spent on them makes it worth while.

I always miss some, but always try to get them as good as I can. I'm never in a rush for them to be finished (the last game I played was around 1995, other then a intro game of warhammer during 7th) but then, that would explain why I only finish about 2 stands of minis a year! But it does give me tons more time to devote to being completely o.c.d. over mold lines! ;)

I loathe mold lines with the fiery passion of a bus full of middle age woman on their way to a Twilight convention.

I've also never seen anyone here paint on the sprue. Never tried it myself as having infantry based up means you at least get to play with them before they're painted.

I never paint on the sprue, either. Never occurred to me to do that. Guess it would have some advantages, but I like de-spruing everything and and painting them that way.

So you loathe mold lines with the fiery passion like when you're on the bus to the Twilight convention?

I tried painting on the sprue once, on a 1/72 scale EA-6B prowler. It was easier to spray paint the parts that way. However, many (if not most) of the places I had to cut to get the parts off the sprue were on the outside of the model after construction, and had to be retouched. I never finished that model either.

I de-sprue but then mount the infantry onto a strip of cardboard with painters tape. This allows me to get the best of both worlds, so to speak. Mold lines on your models are like the sounds of pigs being slaughtered [shudders]
