Reminds me of the "publicity stunt" around '95 when they first trotted out a full smurf chapter. : Look a 40k scale Thunderhawk !!! only £300 at the time (i believe.) All metal, limited ed. weight several kg and almost impossible to build so i heard.

At the time my friends all said, cool, but would anyone really buy one at that price ?

Now i see people playing 40k with titan battle groups...

Lets be honest, there are people out there with too much money. Would i market this if i were GW ? Hell yes. :-)

Zero cost to GW, but also zero benefit to the customer. If there's no benefit to the customer, what's the point? A publicity stunt? Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary pulls publicity stunts all the time, but at least he is making the point that his airline is cheap - i.e. there's a benefit to the customer. As JZ says, the fan base is already vocal about rising costs and the need for a high number of models to play a game - surely this can't help.

Auto companies often make concept cars as a marketing exercise, rather than because they think they'll sell one. Supercars are often the same.

Concept cars and supercars push the boundaries in terms of styling / technology / power as well as price. A better comparison would be to say Ford are trying to flog me 1000 Fiesta's in one go with no discount, when I could go to a franchise dealer and get them for less. ;)

Cheers

They're pushing the cachet of having a large collection. Who doesn't, in their heart of hearts, want to have a primarchload arrayed from horizon to horizon, striking awe and fear in the hearts of players everywhere? Having a chapter on sale, I still doubt that very many will ever field a full chapter, but it makes fielding a company less patently mad. Let alone an IG regiment, Inquisitorial retinue, SoB harem, etc.

Too bad they didn't bother to actually paint a Chapter. Their photoshops are always so unconvincing. See also: the IG regiment in the 4th ed codex.

I heard someone of another forum (Warseer possibly) said they had bought one.

I think there was meant to be over 1k of saving compared to regular GW pricing, so a decent amount, though it could still be bought cheaper from discount retailers. There is some free stuff signed by the authors and a couple of signed art prints that come with the chapter, so if an individual, group or club were going to buy a chapter anyway it might be worth considering.

Yeah, someone on WS said they got one. I seem to remember the savings is 17%.

My wife is just always conscious that there are far worse things I could collect, so she says nothing.

I don't think there's anything wrong with them having the product listed, it just does a couple of useful things. Like, gives the store workers something to wow the kids with, and reminds the hoarders that there is always more they could buy.

I'm quite sure they have sold some, there are plenty of "my collection is bigger than yours" 50 year old pre-teens and just old fashioned collectors. But I do feel sorry for any of them who contemplate painting it.

How come this has come up again now? Have they tweaked the product?
