I originally posted this in the terrain section, but thought I would repost here for people.

For those of you who haven't been following them on Facebook, Games and Gears are about to start their kickstarter for their modular battle boards. As well as the plastic ones based on the DZC card boards they are looking to do some other textured types. Remember, they are planning to sell 6 2 by 2 boards for less than $100 (~£60).
The kickstarter was approved last week and they are ready with all the stretch goals, perks and videos.
Expect it to go live some point this week. :spin

More info.

Sets of 6 tiles are expected to retail around £125 (significantly cheaper then the Realms boards), but through the KS, sets will be available for the first thousand people at a price of £62. I believe there will be 5 themes to choose from:

10mm Sci fi Urban (based on the designs from Drop Zone Commander)
28mm Sci fi Urban (again based on DZC but upscaled for 28mm)
Futuristic (think anime, infinity style, could be used as a ship interior)
Hellscape (cracked and textured with demonic symbols across the ground)
Fantasy Urban (think village with cobblestones)

They are all relatively flat compared to the Realms boards (obviously easier to store and you don't get stuck with the same hills).
They also come painted! Now this won't be massively detailed (think base coat/wash), but it does mean you can use them straight away!
If the KS does well they may release other themes. Various perks will also be available which include scatter terrain in the themes of some of the boards.
Supposedly they are also compatible with the Realms boards, whatever that means, hopefully that means same height and uses similar clips, we will have to see.

I am planning on going in on a couple of sets of the 10mm urban to make an epic city out of (one clean, one damaged) and possibly some relatively plain ones (something like grassland/rural or if not the Hellscape and I will fill over the detail) so I can do a mixed urban/rural board.

If anyone else is interested, go and check out their FB page as they have pictures of the boards on there.

Matt

I've never done a kickstarter before so am a bit concerned that when I pledged I wasn't asked to select which boards I wanted. I'm assuming that I'll be asked this once the project is funded but do you reckon I'm right? :eh

yes, once the project is over (in 44 days) you will be sent a survey where you can fill out the specific details of what you want. For right now, all you need to do is tell them what pledge level you are taking and how much total you are pledging (which might be different if you want add-ons).

Later, as they unlock more stuff, you can click the button to "Manage your pledge" and change those things if you decide you want more (or less)

It works that way because a lot of KSers add so much value that people are tweaking their amounts fairly frequently and trying to keep a running tally of what everyone wants from moment to moment would be too much of a hassle (and unnecessary).

Frequently with these things, once it gets big enough, the creator or an enthusiastic fan will put together a pledge calculator spreadsheet or something similar to help people make sure they are pledging the right amount for what they want, but this one is only a few hours old.

I like the look of their stuff, although none of the boards grabbed me *quite* enough to go for it in the end....

Yeah, me too. The idea sounds good but I just don't quite"get" it - they all look kind of flat to me...

While that is kinda true, so are almost all wargame tables I have actually played on. It does look like these have a fair amount of texture, they just lack hills. Which isn't a problem for me for the city layouts. For the Hellboard style or the grassland/desert/open field styles that some people are asking for, yeah, the lack of vertical features would be a problem, but the street plans are meant to have buildings added to them, and that makes a more vertically interesting table than just about any table I have seen that is actually meant to be played on, outside of a con.

I do see what you mean, I just don't really see the point. The dropzone commander version looks the most useful.

Anyway, they've definitely got some interest and £62 for a 6x4 table that's not just a sheet of chipboard is a good deal by any standard.

Good luck to them, just not for me ...

yeah, I am having a hard time seeing why anyone would want the Hellscape board, but the 3 with city streets seem worth it to me if you play an appropriate game.I'm not sure what I think about the other one. I can't quite figure out what it is supposed to be or represent.
