Very nicely done, good clean detail.

Thanks for the praise chaps! :)

I am also slightly puzzled as to your choosing THE iconic horde army. It will be breathtaking once finished, though.

It's the carefully highlighted purple carapace areas that particularly takes the time, though I'm also generally pretty slow at painting.

Yeah, tyranids weren't the best to start with. A truescale Titan Legion (that I'm yet to start) will likely be my first fully painted 3-4k Epic army, hopefully by the middle of next year or so. I'm undecided between Legio Ignatum (based on [url=http://wh40k.lexicanum.de/mediawiki/images/thumb/9/95/LegioIgnatumWarhounds.jpg/400px-LegioIgnatumWarhounds.jpg]the old colour scheme modified to be a little less cartoony), Legio Crucius or Legio Metalica or perhaps an alliance of two of them for variety. In any case I'll be doing some extra converting and detailing with the titans and had too short notice before going away for two and a half weeks (during which I had a lot of free time and painted the tyranids) so they weren't an option to paint during the time.

I also have a SM army with me that I've been playing with, but keep changing my mind over which chapter to go for. It'll probably either be Forge World's new favourites The Minotaurs, with their bronze mark 8 armour, dark reputation (might be from World Eaters genestock), speciality for killing loyalist SMs gone bad and expansive armoury of vehicles. Or on the very other end of the SM spectrum the noble Ultramarines, who need no explanation and where I'd paint up all the special characters from 40k including Calgar and his Honour Guard which would be particularly cool. Possibly with some Custodes allies. The army could then be used in 30k Epic games too whereas the Minotaurs couldn't. Anyway, in either case I want to CAD design and print out chapter specific shoulder pads and doors for whichever I do and I won't be able to afford that till next year, so they couldn't be painted for the moment either.

Tyranids were just what I had with me ready to go, so I painted them. I have about 280 points there nearly done and around 1,100 points or so I'm gradually cleaning up and putting together to paint for them but it might well be years till I get a 3k army done as a load of my other Tyranids are on the opposite side of the planet and I want to eventually commission some of the other new style models to do the army properly.

Are you going to be basing them or painting the bases black?

Oh, basing them properly for sure. I ran out of time getting them prepped and put together before leaving (stayed up all night doing it though didn't get as many done as I'd hoped) and didn't have a chance to walk down to the beach to get any fine sand, so I'll add it afterwards. Either way works. They'll be brownish, with 3-4 types of flock and grass. I'd like to do spore chimneys and other tyranid structure on some bases in the army, but will include those on later batches.

Apocolocyntosis wrote:
Crowded bases look good, as Nitpick said, especially as nids armies often seem to have fewer models per base due the scarcity/cost.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist and go for what looks good. I really wanted to get across the horde feel, hence mostly 7 to a base and small bases (20mm round). I'll be adding lots of smaller tyranids as decoration to fill up the spaces on the bases of larger tyranids too. It should look impressive clustered together as the army gets bigger.

Alf O'Mega wrote:
Where did you get the 7 hole bases? Are they custom made or was it more fiddly than that?

They're 20mm round laser cut ply bases from Fenris Games in the UK but they don't come with holes and it allows me to position the models more freely, closer together and nearer the edge without holes. I take each guant and clip close to it's legs off either side then then clip off a small amount front and back so it's left on a rough rectangle. Doesn't have to be that precise. It's fairly quick to cut a matching hole into the ply, gradually trying and enlarging it till the particular guant fits. Green stuff could be used to fill any resulting big gaps, though I haven't needed to yet, and the base sand should cover any small gaps. Photo to illustrate:

I joined here almost exactly 4 years ago, and I'm pretty sure these are the first painted models I've seen from you. ;)

And what a way to start! Some of the best nids I've seen. I don't think they need to be more pink, TBH.

I copied this persons version of the Leviathan colour scheme fairly closely. I could leave the skin as is and had planned to, but after doing the carapace I think the skin lets the model down a bit and I think will look better adjusted a little in tone. I'll test paint lighter and pinker skin on a new model first before changing these though, just in case.

Two years was somewhat of an underestimate - I checked back and the last model I painted was around November 2009 so pretty much 4 years ago. That was my Forge Knight which is the model I'm most proud of (it's converted from and old Knight body and bits from 4-5 different FW kits):

This painting thread is mostly intended for new stuff but for those that haven't seen them I guess this would be a good time to re-post pictures of some other old models I painted.

Part of a small Raven Guard force, one of a few painted up for a showcase article on the old Fanatic site (I got the models free from Fanatic which was nice):

Inspirational stuff! Looking forward to seeing the marines. Though I have a hard time with all this ultrasmurf painting going on. ( please choose something different ;))

Thanks for the tips - I should have guessed it'd be the more fiddly option! Looks really effective though.

The crowed bases look great so does your painting. Thanks for inspiring some just getting back into epic.

When not at work mulching trees I'm gradually working on prepping more Tyranids in my tent. There won't be anything to show for weeks yet but I'm aiming to add to the existing to make this for my first 500 points:
8 Ravenors
8 Termaguants with Flesh Borers
4 Hormaguants
3 Carnifexes

Totally odd question but would you remember which colours you used for the base of your AdMech Knight?

Love the tone and contrast to the red of the armour! :)

I'm a slow, easily distracted, painter and it's been more than a couple of years since I painted anything at all, but I've been working on a small number of Hivefleet Leviathan Tyranids recently.

They're still work in progress - I want to lighten and pinken up the skin a bit more (I'm going for a different tone to the standard off-white), finish the red on the Carnifex's claws and do the bases. I'm pleased with how they're coming on though and I thought I'd start a painting thread and share a photo now my camera is working again:

How envious i am of these models...

I know, I was pretty bitter about this situation at the moment.

Edited because the past is the past.
