The name in itself is good, and obviously funny for those "in the know", but I'd reserve it for another faction.

What GW does with its factions and background is entirely their own concern.
Our naked gorillas can enjoy skinning their enemies if they want to!

Skinnerz speaks to me as a joke from the human because the alien do look fat and heavy, and calling them like skinny dude help them keep high moral.
That could be as well a double sens as the alien could also be adept of skinning their prey, but as we are not talking of a grim dark future fluff, we can add some british humour in DiD fluff, which do make sense.

Of course you are not GW. But the orcoid figure still has "traditional" associations, which predates GW quite a bit. I was only referring GW as they use clear-cut archetypes that everyone here knows, but Blizzards Orcs, Mantics games marauders, shadowrun orcs, etc, all tend to portray orc-like creatures as a warrior/raider culture, rather than one of torturers and sadists. I understand the need to differentiate from GW, but really this is not a GW thing, and archetypes gets established for a reason.

I suspect going against these archetypes may put off or disorient newcommers. It is confusing that the miniature use the visual identity of an established sci-fi archetype (muscular, hunched, ape-like proportions, pillagers, ragtag gear, etc), then the background is clashing with it.

At least that's my feeling. I'd like the background to be relatively consistent and interesting, not only taccomers joke. In the end, the result might just be for the name to be substituted for another - not ending up that different. While the joke is good and the name sounds good too, it just isn't for these aliens I think.

I can see your point, Athmos, but I'd argue the other way – 'skinners' has a very direct and brutal overtone; similar to 'cannibals' or 'savages'. It's entirely likely that the humans will make every effort to label the other side as subhumans or monsters, as this is exactly what has happened in human history since time immemorial – just look at how the civilised Greeks and later Romans labelled other nations as 'barbarians'.

Divorcing Defeat in Detail from sci-fi and fantasy tropes, and instead using historical precedent, seems fairly sensible to me. A sort of dystopian future of a civilised empire/nation/federation against free humans and aliens seems quite cool.

Doubtless the skinners would have their own name for themselves – virtually every nation's word for themselves translates as 'us' or 'people', while their name for outsiders translates as 'them ' or 'subhuman monsters' :D

Have a flick through the wiki entry for the Germanic Wars – there are some wonderfully evocative names, which could be used for different tribes or battles.

Ben : I swore that I wouldn't ever click on a TVtrope link again from my workplace. But I think I know the page you linked. Fair enough.

Apologist : sure, I never doubted the possibility to rationalize it. Anything can be anyway. I Didn't meant to say that following the archetype would make the most sensible or believable name, only that playing true to an archetype DOES HAVE advantages.

It's still just a name anyway, I wanted to voice my mind, but I'll adopt the consensus.

Aye, I could see Skinnerz being a derogatory slang name used by the humans, based on xenophobia and a sense of human superiority.

I only just managed to escape myself!
Suffice it to say they have a list of many types / interpretations of orc, some of which could fit the "we skin enemies and eat their flesh" theme, while some other types of orc would find that behaviour disgusting or even morally reprehensible.

You have to make it a registered trademark for that, copyright is not enough ;)

Ben : Yes, Tolkiens orc for example come to mind, in the sadistic branch of the family, but they tend to be small and wiry (goblin-like ?), rather than huge muscular guys such as yours. God, I must have read the entirety of TVtropes, possibly 2 times. You linked the "our orcs are different" page I suppose ?

According to recent case law, I should be okay if I sell them as "compatible with Skinnerz".
